From the HAMB

Fired up the flathead for the first time in about 3 years (or longer). A little gas and she popped off in about 1/2 revolution of the crankshaft. My wiring job seems to be OK. Only thing left to wire is the kickdown switch for the overdrive. The "three on the tree" works excellent. I used a 51 Ford shift tube on a 1939 steering column and the linkage lined up like it was ready made for this application. The rebuilt master cylinder I had installed "shit the bed", so I bought a NEW one. The hydraulic throwout bearing seems to work good.
My humble thanks to "Vintakes" and "286merc" for the very informative posts on multi carb setups for 97's and 94's. I guess I'll be running 1 carb until I get the power valves and other stuff to do it right the first time. You guys saved me some serious money in "Tylenol".

Looks like a "rat rod" to me.

I had a guy at the swap meet this weekend ask me if I was a "rat rod builder" :shock: I said well I guess so :albino: Then he said he really liked that style of car. :roll:

I drove it around the yard on Monday (ran over a rather large pile of dog shit--had to wash the tires). Burned up a brand new AC Delco electric fuel pump in 20 minutes of run time. I have a pressure regulator in line to drop it to 2.5psi, I guess the AC pump didn't have a relief valve. I got another smaller pump that is 1-4 psi--going in this AM. My fuel line from NAPA melted in the first 5 minutes--I caught it right away (had 2 big fire extinguishers standing by for the first fire-up). The new good/better fuel line is already in. I should be able to flatten some more dog shit this afternoon. :shock:

Burned up another fuel pump this afternoon. The Mr Gasket pressure regulator regulated to 0psi. I took it apart and the piston seal was cockeyed and jammed the thing.

Tom, do you need some dog shit flattened over at your house, too?

hmmmmmmmmm sounds like you need a mechanical pump, your old flathead is simply rejecting the technology of the electrified pump :albino:

This here is the "new" technology electric fuel pump from Purolator-Facet. The second one I installed lasted less than 10 seconds. After checking the Alternator (Mitsubishi GM style internal regulator) for output and my wiring and consulting with Tom Huber, Jerry Meidinger, Rod Hochhalter and (engineer for Facet/Purolator) Jerry Johnston in N.Y. it seems the new fuel pump design cannot withstand a voltage spike to the circuit board and Mr. Johnston said he had some calls on this causing them to burn out. He said to get an older part number (square steel type) pump and that should be OK. On consulting with the other experts, it was deduced that the "exciter" type circuit in the alternator was producing the voltage spike and burning out the circuit board in the pump. This I noticed as the pump quit when the alternator light went out indicating that it was charging. another remedy would be to install a diode in line to the pump to stop the voltage spike. A new "old style" pump is in and running fine. I took the neighbor kids for a dog shit flattening ride around the yard, and later I took my sweetie Kathie on a trip down the county road in front of the house. It's still working great. Now to finish putting the floor in and windshield and take it in for exhaust and wheel alignment.

The old part number for the 1-4psi is Facet 40104. You might need the 2.5-7psi for bigger or more carbs. I went with the lower psi for 1 or 2 94's. The black plastic "Posi-flow" pump is the new one with the sensitive circuit board. The older ones are square steel with an outlet on each side. I ended up with a Mr. Gasket brand one in the 1-4psi range. It looks like the same chinese pump that Purolator-Facet makes. If you do a search for Facet fuel pumps you can see the various models and specs.

Yes, I have a tape measure. I did actually learn wheel alignment in tech school and I will do the tape measure thing as a preliminary check. The way my suspension is set up I need all 4 wheels checked. I'd like to have my high dollar wide whitewalls last as long as possible. We still have at least 1 guy here in Bismarck that can figure out how to align these cars without going to a spec book for reference. Most wheel alignment guys now days cringe terribly if you tell them you have a "Hotrod" with a straight axle. If they can't get the specs in the computer they are lost. I was going to buy a magnetic caster/camber gauge and do a better "rough" setup, but I didn't get around to it. :lol:
