I was the first to graduate the 3rd year 'Specialty Interest Vehicle Technology' course in 2003 at Minnesota West in Granite Falls, MN.  It grew to have a lot of student interest in the years but unfortunately only lasted until a couple of years ago.  It was a great program with great instructors, but the school didn't feel it was necessary any longer.  I hope you have more luck with it as kids need this stuff.
I can't wait to see this one finished...

Noise from the '35

So I mentioned w/s and frame are in, floor fixed, gas filler door, '40 tail lights, and roof insert done.

But I forgot to mention that I put on new exhaust....Red's Headers and straight pipes all the way.....!

For some reason the vid sounds pretty scratchy and popping...not sure why.

I can just about imagine how it really sounds!  C'mon Tom, you know Jake'll have gen-u-wine tuck'n'roll in that mo'sheen!  I'm diggin' the '40 taillights too- but I'm a bit biased.  Hey, a set of '40 merc bumpers would look kool on the '35... I know where there's a pair for sale!

Yes Tom, it's temporary....works better than a 5 gallon pail.  :)

Yes Joel, she'll get the original seats rolled and tucked with some distressed dark brown faux leather.  Hopefully it'll look like old bomber jacket leather.

Are the Merc bumpers drivers as is and what's the price?  I suppose they're getting replaced with Lincoln's......Tim?

I want to wait till I get the Lincoln one. I plan a 46 on the rear so I will let you know. They don't look to bad the rear is better than the front. I think both have been replated at one time.

Since I’ve never been able to get those “good deal on ebay” skirts to fit the ‘35 right (they’re designed for 37-40),   I decided to make a pair for it.  I had saved the roof skin from an ‘88-‘99 reg. cab PU last year with this in mind.  I picked up another roof skin and two of the AB Specialties students and I set to work making a set of skirts the past few class days.  

Here’s the two skins.  Then drew an outline of the shape on the fender and used the old 4 mil clear vinyl trick lightly glued to the fender to transfer the outline. Laid the vinyl onto the skins and added 1" to the bottom for a flange and ½" to the outer edge to flange over.  Cut it out with an electric shear.

Using a brake,  a 90 degree flange was bent in the bottom edge. Then the bottom edge was shrunk with a shrinker to give it a gentle arc to match the purchased skirts.

A tipping die was used on the bead roller to get the outer 1/4" flange to 90 degrees.  (1/4" was used instead of the ½" that had been allowed as it is easier to get with that arc.)  1/4" fine line tape was used as a guide for the first pass; then removed for the rest of the passes.  It takes about 3 passes total,  putting upward pressure as it moves around.  Once it’s to 90 degrees it gets a few shrinks  with the shrinker all around the outer edge. Then it must be hammered down the rest of the way.

Once the bottom and outer flanges were done, the outer edge was shrunk many times to put a little crown in it.  Then the skirts were run through the english wheel to smooth out any wrinkles and give a slight bubble shape.  Almost flat anvils were used on the wheel.  All through the process the skirts were test fit on the car.....many, many times.

When the fit was good a fastening system had to be made.  Here’s what we came up with: “flattened” “Z” brackets for around the arch of the wheel opening (5 of them with two plug welds each) and a button headed bolt in the front and rear of the bottom edge of the skirt to the flange of the fender.  The rear bolt also holds the fender brace.
