removing stuck drums...?
« on: June 05, 2010 8:44 pm »
I was out to french lake today to get a new hub for my Poncho, but being that  i forgot to bring my sledge with to get the drum off the shoes, they just cut the a-arms off behind the ball joints and I got to take home the whole works. now I have to go about getting this mess apart, off the car. anyone have any good ideas or tricks to make this easier? just curious... thanks for your help

in the past I have unbolted the wheel cylinder to help loosen things up.

And make sure the drum isn't bolted to the hub in some way.

i got it apart, i was able to pry it apart and the brake hardware just kind of gave way. as for the hub, it was stuck to the drum, because the knurled part of the stud sticks thru the drum and the drum basically gets pressed onto the hub. had to "coax" it out of the drum, as I did with both hubs on my driving car. now I have drilled out the drum so it clears the studs adequately.

been on 3 shakedown runs with it now, the first one was a little scary, learned after my quick go-round of the neighborhood that I had a leaky fitting, and by the time i got home only had rear brakes. tonight I had her out on the highway doing 75, she stops better now than probably did off the showroom floor, no more leaks thus far, so on wednesday night i will go thru and do a once-over and final adjustment on the brakes along with the standard getting ready for 50's hoo-ha.
