The Last Pileup Road Trip Adventure!
« on: October 14, 2011 3:31 pm »
Todd, Dallas and myself attended the last pileup in an Impala..........nevermind what year it was, when asked what we drove we simply said we drove the Impala down :P .  We decided it we would make the trip a little more memoable and planned some stops on the way....

We pulled out of the FM area around 10:30am on Thursday. Plans were to stop in MPLS for lunch at either a Dinner, Drive-in & Dives place or a Man vs. Food place. After some internet searching and discussion we settled on Psycho Suzi's Motor Lounge. I knew I had seem some people post about it on Facebook too so we punched it into the nav and away we went.

It was a really cool place with a tiki theme. It is located right on the river so we oped for the patio since it was so damn nice out. Todd even ordered a "One Eye Willy"! We had great service and would definitely go back again.

Here are some of the pics from Susy's.....

I tasted the "One Eyed Willy" drink that Todd ordered and it seemed pretty potent. And it must have been, on the way out Todd defaced property in the men's room.................

The next stop was kind of a last minute deal that Todd came up with Thursday morning. We we heading south out of the Twin Cities anyway and Todd remembered we would be heading right past the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake IA. I'm sure everyone knows that this is the last place Buddy Holly, JP Richardson (the Big Bopper) and Ritchie Valens played before being killed in a plane crash on their way to perform in Moorhead, MN. Todd and I have been there several times for the Winter Dance Party and also have attended a few rod runs but it has been many years.

We pulled into Clear Lake a little after 5pm and rolled up the front of the Surf. Greeting us there was a sign telling us that they were open until 4pm every day.........damn. The sign on the door also said it was now a museum as well and I don't remember that from the last time I was there, but as I said it was quite a while ago. So we just screwed off out front for a while and then hit the road again. Our destination for the night was Davenport, IA.

We pulled into Davenport and checked into our luxury suite at the Super 8. Todd realized that he is one of very few people who have ever traveled from Davenport to Davenport in one day.  8)

We ordered some very expensive pizza and sat around drinking beer for a while. We knew we would be able to sleep in on Friday as our next stop did not open until 10AM and was only a 15 minute drive. We were headed for the Mecca of rust, dust and grease..................Antique Archeology in Le Clair, IA. When we arrived we circled the block and found that not all the neighbors must like people poking around judging by the sign we saw.........

Mike's brother was there doing some work on the parking lot. I had seen on their web site that they were to be closed for filming the following week. I think it was Dallas that said to him something about him being out rescuing his brother and his reply was "no I'm stuck here doing this shit".  :D

The shop was allot smaller that I thought it would be. MANY of the items in the store were picked on the show "American Pickers". Some stuff was for sale but the price tags were a bit on the steep side. Most of their business is tshirts and stuff like that. Frank, Mike and Danielle were not around. They had two other tattooed gals working the retail counter. They were constantly asked where Danielle was and if they WERE Danielle.  ::)

Todd had over heard the girls talking to some customers and found out that all the stuff in the building is all Mike's and that Frank had his own place in Savanna, IL. Now this was 55 miles out of the way but we decided what the hell and away we went.

Savanna is a biker town kinda like Sturgis. Frank Fritz Finds is located on Main St and access to the shop is through the bar, Hog Dogs. It was your typical small town antique mall run by a little old lady but was in an old opera house and the second floor was also packed with picks. Credit card payments had to be taken into the bar to have them processed. All the inventory was hand written in a notebook so if something was not priced it too quite a while for her to flip through the book and find it.

After we left Frank place we headed south again. We hit a few storage locker sales and another antique shop on the way. We pulled into Decatur Friday night. Unloaded the car and had a few adult beverages and then went to pick up some more beer and grab a bite to eat. We drove all over town looking for a liquor store and ended up at a grocery store to get some beer. The next day we found out that every damn gas station is a liquor store and there was one out our hotel door.  >:( Live and learn I guess. We stopped and at Steak & Shake. We had never been to one and came highly recommend from Aaron. He was right it was a great value and was actually very good and no one got sick! 8)

The next morning we got up and headed to the Pileup. It was a little strange standing the spectator line but man did they have that figured out. Once the gate opened the crowd flow was fast and next thing you know we were in. I saw Tom's car and Tyler's (flt-blk) too but never ran into either of them all day. That gives you an idea of the crowd. First thing was to get one of the limited edition posters that were for sale and a tshirt. Again this was a very short wait in line and was very organized. Next we hit the swap meet and before you knew it it was lunch time. So we grabbed a bite to eat at one of the many food vendors there. Then it was time to look at some cars. We made it about 1/2 of the way through them and we ran into Other Ryan. It was great to catch up with him and we got to check out the kick ass paint job he had just finished on his bike. It was hot but luckily we had a nice wind to keep us cool, still burned but oh well it beats being cold.

By the time we stumbled back to the car we were exhausted and ready to sit down for a bit. We met up with other Ryan for supper and did a little more catching up and then back to the hotel for some rest before our 13hr drive on Sunday. It turned out to be a very memorable Pileup and I will miss the show for sure.
