Howdy, Can I run Dextron 3 in a C6?  I put dextron 3 in my 1968 C6 and then a friend of mine told me old ford trannys use Type F.  Ive put it in gear and put maybe a total of 100 feet of driving on the car, it seemed to work fine (first and reverse).

I really hope I dont have to drain and flush this thing.  Any ideas?

I tried to get a hold of the tranny God (Mosey) but he's not around right now.  I'll try him later.

I found this online:

TRANSMISSION FLUIDS

Over the years, there have been a confusing array of different ATF types and specifications. Make sure the replacement fluid meets or exceeds all OEM requirements. Using the wrong type of fluid may cause transmission problems and damage.

Type F -- Introduced by Ford in 1967 for their automatics. Also used by Toyota.

Type CJ -- Special fluid for Ford C6 transmissions. Similar to Dexron II. Must not be used in automatics that require Type F. Can be replaced with Mercon or Mercon V.

Type H -- Another limited Ford spec that differs from both Dexron and Type F. Can be replaced with Mercon or Mercon V.

Mercon -- Ford fluid introduced in 1987, very similar to Dexron II. Okay for all earlier Fords except those that require Type F. As of July 1, 2007, the production and licensing of Mercon ATF by Ford ends. Ford says applications that require Mercon ATF can now be serviced with Mercon V.

Mercon V -- Ford's newest type, introduced in 1997 for Ranger, Explorer V6 and Aerostar, and 1998 & up Windstar, Taurus/Sable and Continental. This is the current ATF for all late model Ford products.

Better do some checking on the DextronIII.  The old Dextron would eat the ford clutches up in about 2 or 3 hundred miles. Back in the day you could put type F in a GM trans but not type A in a Ford trans.  Type F in an old GM trans was thicker and would work for a "quick sell it" fix if it was slipping a little.  I'm not sure about the new Dextron stuff.  The old stuff was super strong for cleaning.  We use to use it to flush the sludge out of poorly maintained engines.

I just talked to the transmission God.  He says if you are really going to beat on it - replace w/the correct (he says F because of year) fluid.

If it's just a cruiser and you drive it that way, it will work fine. That CJ for C6's is a few years later and is basically the same as Dexron.  And Dexron II & III are basically the same.  If a good tranny person rebuilt it lately they usually put in the thicker clutches so you can use the Dexron.

If the transmission god thinks it will work, I guess I will leave it in and try it out.
