finned coil...or is it?
« on: January 29, 2008 4:28 am »
I'm going to try to post one pic on this post an the finished product on the other one.  Maybe that'll work.  Some of you know that I was looking for a finned something or another for a master cylinder reservoir.  Well, Russian saved the day and found this old finned aluminum 6 volt coil. I busted out the top ceramic part with a hammer, then cut off the retaining ring.  I then gutted it, cleaned it up, and rounded off the bottom fins.  next I went to Otto's Machine and had them weld in the tube made from solid rod.  I ground down the weld, made a cap on the drill press with a hole saw, and polished it up with  emery cloth and the angle grinder with a 3M roloc disc.  then I went after it with 80 and 120 grit sandpaper.  I got a discount on a tap and tap handle, and tapped it out. I later decided to round the top part of the fins too...I thought I'd share some pics of my "recycled" aluminum. Now it's my reservoir. Thanks Russian!

Haha, no.  I have no idea what it came off of, and i never woulda let it go if it was a 12V.  Ya got lucky striper :P  Found a pair of cordless shears to hack up the seat cover with, still looking for a cheep turkey carver to fix the foam - hopefully i'll have some time this week, tests are swampin me already.

I don't blame ya, they are extremely sexy. Shoulda posted in the wanted adds, I was hesitant about giving it up, but pinstriper had that gleam in his eye.  I don't think I'll ever have the urge to build a 6V car, so I'm just happy that it will serve a purpose.  It sucks getting attached to parts, but I guess that will happen when they sit on your desk for 5 years.
