If you know me you know I'm a wheel whore. Took some 16" x 4" mopar wheels and turned them into 16" x 5", nothing new here I have done that a bunch. The problem was the caps, I want to run '32 to '36 Ford caps so I made some adapters. Some of you might remember I was looking for some dome shape metal to do this with. I found the bottom of Freon bottles worked!! After cutting them out I hammered a lip to give it the thickness and the strength necessary to hold the cap, welded them to the wheel. Will have to do some bondo work before paint.

WOW thoes turned out GREAT! I really like em with the $600 spinners.

What are they for? And what did you use to cut the rings out of the keg?

Nice stuff you've been doing Tom.  wheels, gas cap, tin hammering.....what a guy!  I'm also wondering how you cut the bottom out of that can.....and also how you bent the flange over?  Keep talking.

Well guess I got some "esplain" to do. Cut the bottom of the Freon bottle with a die grinder, and center punched a dimple for the compass tip to fit. After marking with the compass I cut on the lines with a right and left tin snips. With a ball-peen hammer I started to work the center of the adapter, this takes some time. Start by hammering over a small lip as the lip starts to form place the outside edge of the adapter on a board and tap down, keep moving and tapping. By using a hubcap  I would  check for size and out of round. Leaving the outside about 1/8" larger than it need to be  I  chuck it in the lath using the center hole and turning the outside to match the center hole. The adapter is about a 1/6 of a inch smaller than the crown on the wheel this leaves room for the welding and bondo work.

Does that make sense??

I think I got the idea.  It would be nice to have a lay....all I've got is the Hawaiian type.

Everybody needs a good lay now and again, especially if you're a wheel whore. The hawaiian type would be juuust fine.

The plan is to find some bias ply tires and run them on the '28 when I go to events that the people there will understand what it's about. :roll: Which leaves most of the local events out. :(

Thanks Pete. Lookin' forward to your shop being on the Toppers garage tour this April.

With all the dinkin' around I have done with steel wheels over the years I find most don't run true. Jack up the front of your project, set something beside the wheel and spin it. If it's bad take off the wheel and spin the hub and check that just to make sure. I'm betting that of the 4 wheels on your project at least two will show so some sings of not being true.

Hey Reed check out the pic!! Looks like this guy found some sort of adapters to run caps. Than painted to match the color of the wheel.

You mean--there's another "WHEEL WHORE" on this earth!!  

I think his freon cans were a different shape.

Cool idea! Where did you get the spinners? I assume they are the same size as the '32-'36 Fords. My wife has 16" Ford steelies on her coupe but wanted to put Plymouth caps on the front. I think I'll try what you did, should work about the same.

I'd like to tell you they are the rare ones from Karl Orr. ( there is like 4 or 5 sets). But nooooooooooooo....... Briz the bumper guys sell them again.
$600.00 set of 4.

They are the same as `32-`36 Ford.
