Anyone else out there build a race car while in cub scouts? If I remember right it was called the pine car derby. I am thinking I built this in the late 70's. As I remeber it wasn't the fastest car there but it wasn't the slowest either.
Post em if ya got em.

Just a passing thought. How much interest is there in building these cars? There isn't any scouts in our area so I have no idea how popular this is.
Would this be something to have at some of the shows or runs. Could have several age groups to cover all from young to old. I saw some posted over on the HAMB and now here and it got me wondering. It would be another activity for the kids (and also big kids).
I remember there were valve cover races at topper way back but never saw it or if there was any interest.
Just a thought.

I don't have any pics of any of mine, but when I was a kid my dad and I put the wheels for the cars in the lathe and tapered the tread. You know, less contact area, less friction...

im a girl and wasnt 'allowed' to have one but my brother drilled out the bottom of his and put batteries in the front along with graphiting the axles and tapered the wheels... same deal less friction and better distribution. and i think my dad still has some kits in the shop from back then.....

I just got word tonight that the boys cars must meet the Scouts rules and regs but the friends and family cars just have to fit the track! This changes everything. :albino:

I got second place in third grade with mine- we got the max weight right on by milling out the bottom of the car and filling it in with lead shot and two part epoxy. I also used graphite!
