He does know that machining the bells alone is about $200 bux. He is just ordering new axles from Moser.

If you have to have the machine work done it's goin to be spendeeeeeee.

The HOT Rod mag article is from Nov. 1960. They used '49 to early'51 Merc  so they could keep the 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern. Beside machining the carrier you need to grind down the axle gears to fit inside the carrier.

Got to thinkin it was Randy Zeller who told me to use 49-51 Ford. He had done it and said the spiders and axle gears didn't mesh that good.

My new ROD and Custom was in the mail when I got home last night. They show the Hot Rod Works doin this. I think if you got their side gears they would mesh better.

Interesting, the old HOT Rod article showed how to do it with junk yard parts, the new mag shows how to do it with advertiser's parts.

Same here, see what I can get away with. Stock axles, pitted bearings and races, pitted ring and pinion, lets race!

I have those drums and stuff for ya.

the idea is to keep the big bolt pattern on the axles

Yes I realize that is what most guys want, but I will be using the small Ford pattern.

Cool, tom. Sorry, just trying to steer the ship a little. What car are you putting these axles and wheels on? is it the roadster with the aprons? is it time for a project progress report yet? I'm stoked to see it.

Hey racer, no apology necessary. The banjo converted to new axles is for a 30 roadster project I want to do after I do my 34-35 Chevy coupe after I redo my '40 convert to a custom after I finish the aprons, hood, tires and wheels on my '28 roadster. It keeps me young.

When Tom and I were on our way out to Fargo to hook up with the Hunnert gang I lost a rear wheel bearing...thought I'd get lucky with old pitted wheel bearings also, didnt work, but luckily I had a new bearing and axle in the trunk...You brought back a bad memory that was jus starting to fade from my memory...haha
