As far as I know you can convert the late 30's top loader to open using F1 parts. Or you may have on F1 tranny. Either way it should be a good tranny and 3rd gear is still 1:1.
Do you have any more pics of the frame?

its a good thing you got that hood or it would have been the back-half of a boattail roadster by now
