I have done it!! Just not with aluminum. The front wheels on the 4d have an 1/2 taken out of them and welded back up. Went to Texas right after that with the car, it work fine. It helps that I have access to a big lath.

I wish I had access to a big lathe. I got to machine some stuff in high school and I loved it. we had to make screwdrivers out of 1 1/2" steel and just mill everything off.  kool stuff.

i heard a lathe is the only tool that can build itself. is it true?

I heard that too...... but you have to be a hell of lot better at it than I am to make one.

Got thinkin'........ on my 3 cars right now there are 12 wheels. Out of those 12, 6 have been modified by me some how. I guess I am a wheel whore. :D

I dont think you could build a lathe with just a lathe...

within th enext year or 2 i plan on owning a mill and a lathe, i bid on a nice bridgeport in a surplus auction at work this month and missed it by 25$  A nice sized lathe is going to go up this spring and im gonna try and get it..   WHere im gonna put it? i dunno yet. it would pit in my garage but then i could only fit 1 car in it hahaha..

Serious- my uncle has a large mill hes going to sell. I think it came out of Alloways machine shop. Nothing wrong with it, they just dumped all there old ones and went with CNC ones. I can get price/pics if you interested.

Heres the pics and info for all who requested it. The brand name is Moore. It came out of Gremada's machine shop. My uncle said it was a precesion jig bore(?) but functions just like a mill. Its about 7.5-8ft tall, and he estimated its weight @3000lbs. It comes with the six tool holders. It is 3-phase. $900, located a couple miles west of Casselton, ND. Its on a pallet, and he has a forklift to load it.

Thats a nice machine, but it dosent have near enough left to right swing that i would want..  Thats a killer heavy Duty machine though..

hellova price too..
