all my airide, and my 4link have shown up.
countdown of 9 days, till i actually get to go work on somehting.
hope to have the motor/tranny, 4link installed at the very least.
gotta make a mounting plate for the valves and such.
Now, i know i need a water trap, and i also heard something about an oiler?
Watertrap prior to the pump? or does it have to be after the tank?
And this oiler? i thought having oil in the bags would be a bad thing. i could see how it moight be good for the valves.
any info?
-
I have never heard about an oiler and as far as a water trap goes I would just put a valve on the bottom of the tank. Unless you need some type of dryer so the valves don't get rusty? I didn't use anything on the 48 but I had pneumatic valves.
So in other words :dontknow:
-
The only times I have heard anybody using driers on an air bag system is when they use it during cold weather(Helper bags for trucks, and etc.) Condensation in lines + cold weather = bad things. I would just put a valve in the tank and mount it easy to access and if inside the trunk, run a line outside somehow so you don't get that nasty water inside (obviously). As far as an oiler, this is the first I have heard about it. Unless you had steel fittings and were worried about water in the lines. But for all the systems I've done, I've never had a problem. I would not worry about it.
-
my valves are SMC brass ones, pretty good ones. so im not really worried about them corroding.
i might just put a drier on it, cause i happen to have a small one from an old air compressor in my dads shop. might help jsut to keep water out.
i cant wait to get to rip into this stuff., im gonna be posting before/durring/after shots of it durring the whole process. i am hoping to get it real low.
-
Most OEM units have a drier built in to them for what it's worth. My Lincoln has a reverse flow drier, so when the car sits idle, it dumps some air out, and blows the crap out of the drier. The only other time I've seen a drier is when a compressor conversion is used, i.e. an AC compressor converted over to an air ride compressor.
-
I use a a filter on my setup on my 90, but I am running a engine driven York 210 compressor. The main point of the filter for my setup is because the York blows so much oil through the line the first month or so before it breaks in.
If you run a filter, make sure your pressure release valve is before the filter, so it blows before the filter does. A check valve should be after the filter so pressure doesnt backflow through the filter if it can, or the compressor.
Did your SMC valves come with moutning brackets or not? If you need some mounting brackets Im not gonna use mine.
-
yea, they came with brackets. im just gonna use a plate in the trunk for them along the side, so when i upholster the trunk there hidden behind the side "wall" if the trunk behind the wheelwell.
OOPS, The above posted is by Ratrodder26.
fogrot to log the wife out. ooops.
-
Sure sure. Now we know who's REALLY building the car! ;-)
-
See this is why we have two computers......He is logged in on one and I am on the other. I don't know how he is going to build a car when he can't figure this out.
-

Did you cut any coils?
-
no coils cut. so i took her off the jackstand and lowered the jack but its still under the engine cradle. yup its stuck. but one tire was flat. so air it up and i should be good to go. now last night i measured the cradle height on my father in laws 49 woody and from the floor to the cradle it was 9 inches. and on my cdan. i got 4 inches. pictures to fallow
-
one of the stuck jack and one of a screw driver to show scale

That screwdriver pic kicks ass.

I really like the composition of the screwdriver pic. In my opinion it is the best of the two. :albino:

All in all it went real well. the way it is now, i wouldent have had to cut the trunk floor at all if i wanted to do it all underneath. its all flush with the top of the rail.
i am thinking eventually i will raise the top bag mounts an inch or so to get the car lower, but this is a good starting point.
the motor and tranny are going in it this weekend.
this was a lot more work than i was expecting but in a way it was wasier than i thought too, i didnt have to cut the floor for the 4bar, or anything. we wlded the rear end in solid to the car at ride height, and just worked from there.
I highly recommend this rear suspension to anyone using these cars, it was relatively painless.
Man i wish i had a lift, working under the car with a grinder and a welder SUCKS. i have all these little penhead burns all over my upper body and arms hahah. WOuld help if i wore a welders jacket and real gloves i guess. but then id be a wuss like TIM! hahahah Just kidding =)
Felt so god to get to work on my own ride. I CANT WAIT till i have my own place.

-
Looks good. Once you get the front bags in you will know if it is set up at the correct height. Nice clean work you did too.
Sorry to hear about all your burns heman........:) I have no burns on my hands or arms but my face looks like I spent the weekend on a beach in Mexico :albino: Oh and Harbor freight has welding gloves on sale if you are interested 3 pair for 7 bux!
-
i might actually have to stop there thursday to get some to take home. thats a good idea.
-
Looks good. So can you hop it? :D
Better get used to questions like that here in ND.
-
bags are for groceries ;) but then again i'm cheep

-
i lilke it
-
Yes, SLant the B Pillars and thats pretty Close. maybe a little lower. but that is damn near right on.
-
When you bringin it home?
-
Bumping this up wondering if you ever got the front bagged yet?
-
Not yet... I dont have the car here, nothings been done since last Xmas on the 49... plans have changed. Im gonna notch the rear and make it lay frame..
so some things need to be changed.
I need dropped spidles for the front too.
~Aaron
-
Laying frame may not be so cool if you have a system failure at 75 on the interstate. I would highly recommend bump stops to give some clearance. Trust me, it is also not cool to hit a pothole in the middle of the Ponderosa parking lot at 5 miles per hour.
-
well, Figurtively.... i dont think with where my Front crossmember is installed it will be able to without some serious modifacation...
i just want it REALLY REALLY low. there will be a bump stop in it.
-
Easy removable bumpstops. something that you can remove when you're cruising, but in place on the highway.
-
If you MUST lay frame I would use blocks that can be bolted to the frame and then replaced as they wear out.
