need a 16 X 4 5 ON 5 1/2 bolt pattern Ford wheel. The hub cap would snap into the wheel. The wheel would be from a '40 to '48
-
Tom, was just dismounting old rotten tires the other night and thought I had a bunch of 4.5 and 5 inch wheels, turns out a bunch of em are 4 inch, I was under the impression that these were a one year (40) only deal? Anybody know? I find it hard to believe that all these wheels I have are from a forty. I did notice that there is dlight differences in the way the hubcaps go on as some have a kinda round raised area and some have more of a rectangular area. Anyway I got one for ya. Weed

As far as I know the 4" wheel was a 40 only thing. ?
-
I though the 3 1/2" was a 1940, 60hp only. But the 4" was used at least up to '42. What size were the '46-'48 ??
Hey Weed I'm gonna look tonight to see what the raised area looks like.
-
Boyz' when I got home from work I dug out my Tardel "Bible" and that is where I read that the 4 inch rim is a one year only (40) deal, says rim width increased to 4.5 and 5 inches the next year. Still doesn't make sense though why the hupcap area would be different unless there was a difference for pickups or sumethin, Still confused, Weed

What about Lincoln or Mercury, were they any different?
-
Good thought , guess I forgot about that possibility. Need to continue research I guess. Weed

Tracy, looked at the other wheels I would like to match. Where the hub cap snaps in there 4 bumps to hold it in ( this is in the inside where the cap fits in ). In between the bolt holes there is a raised part that looks like a pyramid. Does this make sense?? I'm not going to run any caps, thats why I want them to look the same.
-
Yeah, the four bumps is what I'm referring to about being different, some I have are more round looking bumps than the others which are kinda rectangular. I looked last night again and if I remember right the round type say Ford on em and the ones with the rectangular bumps say KH , as in Kelsey Hayes, I'm thinkin this is the main difference. One of the rims with the round bumps also has 12 10 40 on it. Thinking this might be a build date which would also lead me to believe it would have come on a 41 and not a forty, Not sure, but I think I know what you mean about the pyramid, I'll look again when I get home and let you know, either way I should have what you need as I have about 7 4in rims and a few more I haven't checked yet.

That's what great about living in this part of the country, you can still find this stuff!!
The ones I have say Ford on them.

This would change what Tardel's book says. It would not surprise me as Henry would use all the inventory up and some of the early '41 sure could have had 4" on.

Ok, I bead blasted and painted the wheels. On one of the 16' x 4" it has a date of 2-11-42. This was after we entered the war and before the shut down of car manufacturing. My guess is it changed( wider wheels) after the end of the second WW. The two 15" x 5" I'm going to run on the back, which match the design of the 16" x 4" do not have build dates on them. I think they are from a fifty's something pickup.
