Title: Teardrop Trailer
Post by: sixinarow on August 12, 2013 3:48 pm
Picked up what I believe is a Cub/Modernistic, finding a lot of conflicting information regarding the identification. Long story short, a tree had fallen on this one so I am blowing it all apart to put back together.

Looking for some 46-48 Lincoln caps, though I might be able to make some early Ford caps fit.

I have two lug nuts that are being difficult, but once those are loose I'll be able to pull the fenders and then the sides will be free completely. The 'drivers side' panel is complete enough to pull a pattern from.

No more of that tent shit for you. Is Watertown the goal?

I take it that's your garage by your house?

Yeah, I'm pushing for Watertown...

And yes, it's the garage at our place. Detached oversize two-stall. Finally got some additional lighting put up but the electrical needs some attention.

Yes. And it is my first frame off build, haha.

Well it's down to the frame as of now. There was a huge nest under the ice chest in the galley, hope the neighbor didn't mind I disposed of it in their weed patch of a garden. I also found the marking 'BR-24' under one of the wheel wells, I couldn't make out the marking under the other, no idea what it is for though.

Have you found a source for the aluminum angle iron stuff?

McNeilus Steel sells aluminum now as well.  The farmer I welded some aluminum tool boxes for got his there.  You might also talk to Penguin, he's got "blem" sheets that the paint has a small scratch in it when it's shipped he sells for reduced cost, one side is painted the other is bare aluminum.

John at West Side Steel is great to deal with, I'll have a little longer wait on the aluminum, but I will be rebuilding the frame while I wait. Got it down to the frame last night, Tokyo and Tim stopped by to steal meas....er  take measurements. I'm in the rebuilding process now.

How's it going??

We managed to save the original torsion axle, Otto's Welding in Moorhead flattened out a leaf spring for it. The frame is done other than trimming off the old hitch and putting a new one on. On the hunt for 600-16 tires now, and starting on the aluminum. All my rivets and rivet gun are here, but the bits don't fit the cylinder right so I need to get that sorted out.

Didn't meet the goal of Watertown, but I'm glad I didn't slap it together. Frame is painted, wood is coated in Helmsman Urethane, and assembled. I still need to strip the old paint off the old aluminum with Aircraft Remover, but that will wait until after this weekend since we are dog sitting. I have pretty much everything I need to assemble the aluminum.
I'm on the lookout for a pair of 1946-48 Lincoln caps (hex logo or Lincoln script).

Putting stuff back together is way better than sanding and removing old paint. And bucking solid rivets kicks ass!

Looks like the shrinker worked on aluminum angle stuff or? I can't tell if I see cut marks or just maks on them.

Shrinker worked great, probably a little more time consuming than cutting and bending, but it keeps it nice and rigid.

Took advantage of the 'warmer' temps to fire up the ReddyHeater to putz on the teardrop last night while enjoying a slushy beer from the garage fridge. Should be building the side door and installing the windows soon.
