Title: Y block questions
Post by: Eyeball on September 06, 2012 2:59 pm
Just a few thoughts, I am close to having the 59 F100 on the road but it burns alot of oil. I think that the rings are stuck. I plan on running quite a bit of magic snake oil through it to see if I can get them to free up. But if I can't then I will need to change out or rebuild the motor. So will 292 and 312 interchange? I also have a spare, fresh
SBC but if I went this route I would like to retain the factory 4 speed. It has a hydro clutch and sounds great in all gears. Does anyone know how or if you can mate a SBC to the 59 F100 4 speed?

All I can tell you is the 292 and 312 are the same block.

292 and 312 are physically the exact same, no issue with swap other than you might need to swap oil pans but that is a truck/car issue not a 292/312 issue.  I bought an adapter to go from Chevy engine to ford transmission on my panel from Speedway and it would be the exact same for you and the 59 transmission.  Need Chevy flywheel, chevy pressure plate, ford clutch plate, ford throwout bearing. comes with a pilot adapter in the speedway kit.

It looks ready for a push bar...
I think Speedway had an adapter that linked that era Ford trans to GM, but it was to the GM bell housing I believe.

(Lucky is faster than I)

I got mine cheaper as it was a returned item.  I don't have a hydro-clutch so that may be an issue for you.  Really you want an adapter between the bellhousing and engine not the bellhousing and transmission.

Truck looks good! I know of a fresh, never run, 272 or 292 (can't remember which, but same block) for sale. Not sure of price.
If you're interested, give me a yell.

yeah, 312 - 292 should be the same block and engine mounts.
