chill out.

I've seen it before. It's a swell ride.
-
So here it is in all its Suede green glory. 1957 210 with 400 sbc with a holley and an Edelbrock alum intake, 700R4 w/lockup converter, modern power brakes, 57 Olds caps, lowered 3" or so, recent full dual exhaust with Brockman mufflers. Runs nice, drives nice, stops nice. Plans? Drive it.
-
awesome.. can't wait to see it in person.
-
I got to take the "Peter Mobile" for a drive tonight and it really is a nice driving ride.....congrats Pete!
-
Have fun with it Pete! Cruise to Wahp. sometime.

So, that could also be the Peter Beater huh? Looks kewl, luv them shoeboxes...

The Peter Beater. Super. I guess if it works it works. This vehicle was purchased as a traditional era friendly Suedes hauling club car that is also a blank canvas of sorts for those who are developing their kustom interior and paint skills. I'm excited about it but school and work have all my time for the duration. Have to finish up some other car related projects first but I couldn't pass up a nice running driving people hauler for the price.
It obviously needs a few things as all cars do, and I'll just drive it for the rest of the season. Mechanically, I need to modify the lowering blocks to change the rearend pinion angle before I drive it any distance. It has a subtle steady driveshaft vibration on the highway and I can see the pinion is angled downward.
There is no grille. The signal lights are 50 chevrolet. A 57 buick grille is being pursued. Thank goodness there isn't a grille because then I couldn't access the friction locked belt that holds down the hood. The hood latch is present but not bolted to anything in the center, just the crossmember that bolts to the fenders so the crossmember flops around a little. I'll wait to fabricate something until I have a grille to work with as well.
The front bumper ends seem to hold the fronts of the fenders up via a bracket and this bracket is missing on the drivers side so the fender flops around a little. Need that brace. The car was hit on the drivers side at one time and the cowl in front of the windshield is pushed in. Interesting hit. Will have to weld on some pins and slide hammer it out.
The electric wiper motor reportedly works, but not from the inside of the car as the cable is frozen. The plastic clip on the wiper motor that the cable connects to is also broken off so I'll need to track that stuff down. Whatever hooks the two wipers together is absent so I have a drivers wiper only. The windshield will be replaced asap as its cracked and cloudy and I wouldn't mind except I spend a lot of driving time looking through the darn thing.
The signal lights don't self cancel due to a small child happily signaling left and right incessantly as his pops worked on the car so I need to replace the cam or something related in the column.
The radio doesn't work but that might have something to do with that radio delete plate in the dash. Same with the clock. 210's rock.
The heater fan doesn't blow (and therefore does) so I either need a switch or a fan motor. I haven't looked under the dash but there is some iffy wiring hanging around, might have something to do with it so that'll be investigated.
The drivers window is shattered. The previous owner replaced it once and must be missing a part inside the door so it flops around side to side so it makes sense that he said it broke when he shut the door.
The fuel door hinge has one broken arm so if flops a little. It does have a new fuel tank so thats cool.
The floors are good, your standard fist size holes in the floorboards by the front doors between the sill and the kick panels. Needs rockers and inner rockers but everything else is pretty good. Any tri-five chevy hulks laying around I can cut good floor sections out of?
If you have any of the parts above I'd be grateful to be able to purchase them. Whats needed is pretty much 57 chevy only stuff as everything else mechanical and GM is in good shape. Any 57 chrome or stainless? I'd love to know what you'd sell and I'll see what mine looks like. All my chrome can be improved upon. Thanks again guys.
-
Very nice! What are the power brakes - a kit swap or...? Either way, drive the wheels off of it!
-
pete, i have access to alot of that stuff, the wrecking yard here still has alot of 57 four doors and stuff in it. I am gonna put a Newport Engineering Electric wiper motor in my Edsel, and it has a 57 Chevy one on it right now that works. 57 Chevy factory wiper motors are spendy.
-
Cool Pete..........sorry I don't have any five seven stuff.
-
Good score Pete! Where is it from? I think I have seen it before.

You probably have.

If you look closely you can see it.

that belonged to Lance i believe... Groundpounder on the hamb
-
Yessir it did. He did a good job of giving it "the look".
Been slowly cleaning stuff out of it. There is a box with about 5 gallons of water in it and I kept that in there. We assumed I'll need it. However, maybe its simply because of something I learned about Lance. He was apparently known for his skills in packing a trunk full of devices and chemicals to help keep most any car going on a run. Perhaps I'll continue that trend. . .
Stephan and I discovered the genius of some unknown engineer and his trim fastener design tonight as we replaced the drivers quarter panel splash trim without tools while consuming a Grain Belt. Removal/reinstallation was simple and made a big difference. At this point we're simply trying to clean up the car a little. Looking for a drivers fender trim piece next.
-
Neato! Still working on that '57 Buick grille- I really don't know what to offer a guy that thinks he has everything. That bum from the bus station doesn't want any cash, just old dirt track tires.
The car looks good- get it in the right light and it'll look even better. :) I think for a minimal amount of cash it could be easily transformed into the coolest '57 more-door around. A little tuck and roll, maybe a laced top, and perhaps some fender skirts?...
Congratulations Pete- You're officially Suedesworthy. Maybe the license plate should read HANDCHK ?
-
Looks like there's a nice '57 Buick grille on Ebay right now $99/side + $35/side shipping...

Thats a fun car. I know! I'll keep my eye open around here for parts for you. Never know what I'll come up with!
-
did you get your club plaque mounted yet?
-
Can I get a ride?
-
No, yes, and I found and sent payment for a 57 buick special grille. Score.
-
Congrats! I'm excited to see it in person!
-
Well, some of you have felt the neck jerk of the poor throttle linkage geometery coupled with the solid motor mounts.
Found a pair of front fenders on craigslist, one of which is the matching green 210 fender for the drivers side. The trim even looked good. Hopefully they're still available and I hope they'll separate or I'll have a white 57 passenger side fender for sale shortly. The non-matching green fender is more hokey than I'd like, but then again, I'm trying to match rusty green fenders to the rest of my rusty green car. . .

Oh yeah, its gonna be licensed as a ND vehicle shortly. You can paint license plates to match the car, right? :D

Sure you can paint it any color you want, just make sure you have the right color when you take it to the DMV and hope if you ever get pulled over the cop doesn’t know the diff.

Fair enough.
I did score the "matching" green fender I talked about. Only had to buy the one side too. I needed trim for that fender too so this saves me the time to find it.

Ya gonna convert it to a two door?? I sure Tim can give you some pointers. :P
-
i believe that i read a thread on the hamb on how to do that !!
-
Um, no. Thank you for the suggestion though. :)
-
Aww, I didn't do that bad of a job matching paint on the fender. Only paid 50 for it. Haha. That new fender and buick grille is a bitchin score.
-
Welcome Lance!

I've been signed up here maybe 5 years, figuered about time I made a post :p. I was diggin around and think I found a few more chrome pieces, like another right side front fender brow or whatever you call it. I will probably getting rid of a few other things like some of my engines and transmissions, will try to get em posted here first in the classifieds. I figured I will find different stuff when it comes time to start building stuff again.
-
Got the '57 back in Fargo after we thrashed on it a little. Big thanks to Joel as he did an awesome job fixing my drivers window and replaced all the felt to make it nice and tight again. No rattles. Then he and a friend replaced my the drivers front fender with something that matched a little better. I got the wiper working again, still have to hook up the cables to the passenger side wiper transmission I purchased. Removed the rubber bumper bullets from the front bumper and installed the 210 pieces again, and fixed the back bumper 210 bumper bullet inserts as well. The front end still has some aligning to do, but its looking better steadily. Next is 57 Buick grille and Suedes drag plate. Would like to have matching rear bumper ends. One is Bel Air and one is 210....
-
LQQKN' good Pete.
-
The Peter Beater returns,,,,,
-
lol, forgot about the Peter Beater, thats good stuff.
-
up next as stated: grille
-
did ya find a grille?
-
i also like 54 buick waterfalls in 57 Chevys too...
-
Having a grille will make a huge difference... TEETH! coming soon to a Chevy near you...
-
Well, we've all seen the grille, but I like this picture.
Today I got the turn signals to cancel themselves. Everything had fallen apart inside the column, so I had a pile of parts on the bottom of the column cover. I kinda had to guess how everything went back together and how everything worked. It helped that I had purchased a new spring and pawl kit, which I installed. See the picture of the column. The bumper on top is there, the one on bottom is missing. I ripped off a little chunk of shingle off the garage at my apartment and folded it in half, trimmed it, and stuck it in the two slots in the signal mechanism. The bottom one in the picture is not in yet. I adjusted the tangs on the steering wheel and, bam!, turn signals cancelled. Of course, I over adjusted the steel tangs on the steering wheel the first time so they clicked those little plastic pawls everytime i turned the wheel enough. Lame. I took the wheel off again and got it tweaked correctly eventually. Then it was time to set Stefans valve lash....a great day overall.
On a sad note, I was out driving the '57 and stopped at a gas station to check out the vacuum whistle i was hearing. I had just checked the vice grips that were helping secure the grille for now and heard one fall to the ground and forgot about it until now. Damn. Someone got a free vice grip.

Cool!

Felt like a big night tonight. Finally dug into the instrument panel to replace the dash light bulbs, ran another wire from the coolant sensor to the gauge so I have a functioning coolant temp gauge now. I also have a functioning horn as of today for all you safety buffs out there. Quite a horn it is, sounds somewhere between a Model A horn and a dying cow. Replaced some of the "wrap the wire around the bolt" electrical fittings with real wiring eye fittings. All wiring repairs were even soldered splices and shrink tubing to boot.
Adjusted the shift indicator to make as much sense as possible when going from a powerglide (PNDLR) to a standard overdrive auto trans pattern. Perhaps I'll put one of those fancy updated shift indicator tags in the dash.
Getting the dash lights to work required cleaning and rebuilding the headlight switch. What a crazy spring loaded bomb those little contraptions are. All lights now work properly on the car except the oil pressure light. The light itself works (i grounded it out to test it), but there is no sender on the engine at this time, so that's coming.
Next? Windshield, pounding out the cowl dent, and windshield wipers. My neighbor came over and took my splashpan template. He's laser cutting one out and braking the flanges for me. What a guy!! Then I can wire some front signal lights so people will stop giving me funny looks (add that to the list of the only lights on the car that don't work properly).
-
It's amazing how far this car has come. It went from the Peter Beater to Peter's over-eager beaver eater... and by that I mean he's done a swell job.
-
Thanks Joel, its been awhile I guess.
I had Beck's Customs install a new windshield and rubber, so gazing at the stars is much better now. The front seat was reinforced so it doesn't wobble as much and all holes in the floor have had patches welded in and seam sealed, including a patch on the rear wheelhouse that liked to spray the inside of my rear windows with water. I then installed carpet via Mac's Hardware store (love that place). At Mac's I also found some fancy front signal lights and mounted them behind the grille on the splash pan after driving a few months without signals in front. I don't get the bird waved at me as much now, coincidently.
If anybody can figure out how to install a new seat cover while the seat is still in the car, I'm all ears. Its welded in.
Still lovin' every minute I drive it. I'll eventually raise the car an inch or so, the poor ride quality is getting to me.
The heater takes the edge off on a 30 degree day, but I'm curious how thats going to work when its zero degrees out. I probably should bleed the cooling system as I'm suspecting there is air in the top heater hose. I applied rain-X anti-fog formula to the inside windows and yes, I'm now a believer. Its great stuff.
Its been determined that the camshaft I installed is probably a 350hp/350 like out of a 70 Camaro LT1. My favorite flat tappet SBC cam yet. Idles at 400rpm or less, snappy response, pulls strong to 5500rpm. GM knew what the hell they were doing.
-
Is it a bench? Might be doable, but you'll spend a majority of time on your back, snipping and then hog ringing the new one on. Won't be easy, but I'm guessing you can do it if you're determined.
-
Pete, I just put onena dem der cowboy style saddle blanket? type seat covers in da ol gray 56 and it fit really good...I think its actually for a full size piggup but it was really easy to put in without removing the seat. The side bolster things work really good to push the cover into on the sides and its got the fugly strings dat go down the backrest and get tied to the bottom seat cover part. 2 weeks later I bought a matching one for the rear seat at ALCO but that was a two piece and didnt really fit worth a shit...
