hi everyone, i finally figurd out how to post on here, so here it goes. this is my 1929 A special coupe. I have almost got it done, just a ew things left to wrap up. wantd to take it to sabin in july but money and time got short. still need some ideas for tail lights for tetanus, so open to suggestions, but dont want the run of the mill tail lights. ant something different for it. for those out there that r going to rumble about the motor being a chevy, sorry it was in the donor car i got and "thats all i got to say about that" plus i think the manifold makes the car. this is the first rat i have built, kinda different for me and dont know the ins and outs of straight axles yet. please bare with me.
-
Neat car, I like your dash and the rear radiator setup. The whole package looks mean. Nothin' rat about it (the term is basically forbidden anyway), its just not finished yet. You're little more than a paint job away from a badass drag coupe! The intake would "make the car" on a first-gen Camaro vintage Trans Am racer. You need some deuces man, and lots of 'em!! Or dual quads? Lookin' Good!
-
It looks great, I like the intake too. The body on your coupe is so nice it is a shame not to paint it. Your front wheels are my all time favorite.....some day I will have a pair of them.
Looks like you are running a Model A axle? and what rear is in it?
-
yeah i am using the axle that came with the car but i have to redo it. the rear end is out of a 80 malibu. i used the arms, coil springs and shocks from it, it was my donor car. dont know if it is any good still yet, or if ratio is what i am looking for, havent took the cover off yet to see. the whole painting thing is up in the air but if i did body patch panels then i would have to paint it then i would have to worry about stupid people dinging it up and scratching it. plus the licsence plate says tetanus on it. I got a 30 sedan also and that is going to be painted. this is for driving and the sedan is for shows. this will keep me from driving the sedan. i sold my 69 pick-up cause some idiot teenagers went and shot it with a bb gun years back 3 days after i got it painted.

those would go good witht he horn i picked up from back to the fifties this year. what kind of hudson were they on?

Well if they are not repoppin them I can see why.
-
Todd, I think I got a funky Hudson air cleaner to go wit them taillights...
-
I think those are 1949 or 50 Hudson. I've had a set on my shelf for about six years now, just waiting for the perfect application. I've seen them on A's before and they do look nice. If I remember right, the contour on the back of the surround doesn't quite match but it is easily fixes with a little grinding. Or I always thought they would look nice frenched in a couple of inches.
-
Nice coupe by the way. I really like the front end setup. Any plans to chop it?

i havent decided yet been working on it from the frame up to the roof. so if there is room then it will get a hair cut. i am going to put the wood back in the top so i dont know how much room that take up yet. we will see...

Ha, I cant remember but I might even have some of them taillites too...

any other ideas for tail lights out there?
-
just a quick update... got the brake master clyinder in and working. also got the shifter made and operating. so close yet so far away, hope i can drive it once this year before the dam snow comes.
-
I've seen '49 ford taillights on T's and A's mounted vertically and at a 45 degree angle...
-
got the grill mounted this weekend and some odds and ends stuff done. have to redo my steering box now. but it isnt the end of the world i qeuss.

Normaly the grill mounts to the radiator, are you running a different radiator like a mustang or something?

The radiator is in the back. :?

was thinking of making it a reserve gas tank actually in the shell. so i could freak out the old guys at the pumps by putting gas in it.
-
pleased to say that i got the steering box working, the right way this time.
-
if i decided to chop this thing, what would be a good chop you think, 1, 2, or 3 inches?
-
they did mein 4 in and i dont think that is real radical may as well have the LOOK maybee just a little less if you have too use some duct tape and test, i have roof clearance on this one
-
i was searching the for sale adds on here and i think pinstripper sold this car a couple of years back. the faded green paint and rust wholes match. anyone else think so
-
built the exhaust for the beast yesterday.
-
Steering arms?
-
found some right hand drive factory steering arms for her the other day on ebay, going to win them so it looks factory.
-
heres the latest on the old girl, not bad for 4 or 5 days of working on it.
-
Ok........I have been watching this build and I like most of what I see. But ( you knew this was coming ) spindle mounts front wheels means no front brakes!!! :o And the rear brakes are hooked to slicks. You will also have front tire scuffing when turning with the front mount tie rod but that not that a big deal. Just will have to buy tires more offten. ;)
Now if your going to use it for drag racing only ( in my best Lily Tomlin voice ) " never mind " ???
-
i agree with you tom on the brakes, and i am thinking on a way to put some on there. i think so cal has a brake kit for spindle mounts which i am looking into. this is the first A i have ever built, and by myself, i am learning as i go. feedback is important to me so i dont have to do things over. i have just had to do that one time so far, thank god. i thought i would be different and use the 29 axle and spindle combo for 2 reasons. 1. i had them and didnt have to buy something. 2. i just didnt know better. i know now y everyone uses juice spindles. easier to find parts thats for sure. if u knew me better, it seems i do things the hard way but i get it done. think i have a complex form of ADD that if it doesnt make me think then i wont do it. didnt see any fun in doing something a ton of other people have done thats all i am going for. i probably thought for 2 months on how i was going to get the tie rod on wth out it sitting so low that it would hit, and i came up with this. i found a " right hand drive" steering arm took it from the passenger side to the driver but in front and took the stock one and moved it over. in theory i thought that it was the same distance apart so it should work. but like you said, i got some scuffing. i think if i get it wider, it would be closer to center of rear axle to front axle line. still learning and we will build and learn. advise turns to knowledge and with that thank you everybody.

I understand, and if your like a lot of us never enough money to do all the things you want. I have a roadster and a RPU that have `40 Ford style brakes on front. A `40 Chevy rag top with disk on front. Now the Chevy is a lot heaver that the other two but stops a lot better. They say front brakes are 60% of your stopping power, hate to see anybody get hurt. Keep in mind that you ARE building a car and not sitting on the sidelines, for that you get my respect!!
-
Just give the spindle mounts to me and your problem is solved. I love the looks of them but have to agree, if your gonna drive it you should have front brakes. Drove my wife's coupe without front brakes and slicks. Was like trying to stop on ice, especially if it's a little wet out. I saw something on the HAMB once about someone who adapted a disc brake to a spindle mount. If I remember right it didn't take alot of work, didn't ruin the wheel (a major concern of mine, Lord knows they aren't cheap) and it actually worked. I'll see if I can find the tech article. Keep up the kick ass work on the coupe. Would love to see it somewhere this summer.
-
Here is a few threads I found. They machined the back of the wheel to accept the disc, pretty straight forward. May give you some ideas if you want to do it yourself. If you need some machine wirk done I think I know a guy who would do it for cheap. Good luck

thank flathead for the links. i think i like the ones were it looks like bead lock brakes and will probably go with that set up. just for the fact that i dont think there is alot of room for the disc to be put on the middle of the wheel. i think i am going to have it in toppers this year and definitely want to take it to back to the fifties.

headlights are mounted now. think they have a good stance to them.
