Title: flathead parts
Post by: overspray on October 14, 2008 8:31 pm
Well I gambled on this flathead I saved from the crusher.  I got it running and it appears to have a gopher rebuild (green) shortblock.   Ran great but had 1 dead cylinder.  I pulled the head and there is a crack from the intake seat to the cylinder wall.  Pistons are stamped .030--49-53 block (8rt truck motor).  I found out this is possible to repair but I don't know the cost.  It has the truck water pumps with the nice mounts (wide belt) and a nice truck pan with cleanout, truck bellhousing which accepts the early (48 down) transmission.  I put a rebuilt starter on it.
I'll throw in another set of 8BA heads.

$125.00 and it's yours minus the transmission and the new 12 volt coil I put on.

for another $125.00 you can have the heavy duty 1947-52 open drive 3 speed (the trans was in a 1939 Ford behind a 350 Chevy and still is in great shape).

I'm not sure.  I didn't spend a lot of time getting the specifics of that type of crack repair.  The flathead guys on the HAMB said it wasn't cheap but could be done.  I don't know what they meant by "cheap".  Maybe Wayne Ruud would give an idea on cost.

But, there's a good crank, rods, .030 pistons, oil pump, valves, lifters, guides, truck pan (they go pretty well on ebay around $80-120), bell housing adapter (they go good on ebay around $65-85), truck water pumps (around $40-50 a pair used), flywheel clutch pressure plate-gotta be worth something, rebuilt starter I just bought for $45, 94 carb is worth $30 for a core, generator, fan assembly.  That's why the add is:--

"Flathead parts"

Got a good block--bore it .030 and put a cheap engine together.

Part it out, cause I don't want too.

OR trade me for other cool stuff of undetermined nature.

I have another one I think will run, Travis.  I have to drag it in and see.  I'm flatheaded-disillusioned.  I'm going back to overhead valve.

Give me a call.
