Title: BARN FIND!!!!
Post by: JakesBackyard on July 18, 2008 4:00 am
:D
Well not really a barn. It was driven into the corner of a heated shop in 1966, Veblen, SD. Put into a storage unit in Wahpeton last Nov. and the pics are in my driveway this afternoon. No, it's not the '40 Ford Coupe I've always thought someone would call me to come and get, but man, am I excited! I found out about it Monday night and today it's mine.
1935 Ford Tudor Slantback Sedan. Radio, South Window heater, extra guages, vacumm dash fan (never seen one before), and pretty complete. Rear view mirror with hole where the clock (I think) used to be. And check out the shift knob. The brakes (mechanical) still work even. Pretty straight, a couple small rust spots in rear fenders, one soft spot under drivers feet, roof leaked so headliner is shot, two roof bows are down from something stored on it, and the rest is what you see.
Plans are to get it running hopefully. It turns over with the crank. Depending on if/how it runs will determine where I go with it. I would love it if it ran pretty good, drop the front about 8 inches, some cheap wheels and tires (I better talk nicer to the "wheel/tire whore".), hopefully pressure wash the light grey repaint off (its dark grey underneath), a cheap interior (I know a guy), maybe some hydraulic brakes, and have some fun just putsing around with it. I'll probably be asking many questions. It's been a long time since I had any thing to do with a "Flatty". And then I was real young and just drove them. One I swore a lot at because it didn't run too well.
Here's some pics.......

Sorry Tim...I'm getting old and traditional....If all goes well with it running...I'll be wanting to figure out (with some cheap stuff) how to drop the front and all the other stuff. Got any ideas......? :)

HoHOHOHoHoHOoooooo in my best Tim Allen voice. That is truly a nice score...There is a guy up around here that inherited a 35 from his ex-father in-law. It was painted orange back in the sixties and had a merc flatty. He called me for advice on it and I went and looked at it and told him I'd leave it as is , as it was complete and the Merc motor was loose. Next time I visited him with a spare tire mount for the rear, the body was off the frame, the flatty was gone and the complete X-member was torched out and he was trying to mount a fuel-injected newer engine in it. TOTALLY RUINED IT! I just shook my head and thought why even bother wit some people.....
Title: SHE RUNS!
Post by: JakesBackyard on July 22, 2008 5:06 am
And I gotta say pretty darned nice. Bought one battery cable, a barb connector and 5 feet of hose (to hook up my gas can to the fuel pump), borrowed a 6 volt battery, cleaned the plugs and tried it. One fire and then nothing. Checked the spark and it was pretty weak and kind of sporadic. So off came the generator and fan. Took the coil off and it looked like the rotars were a little corroded. So turned it over with the crank and filed the rotar contacts and the four wire contacts on top. Put the coil back on and she fired right up.
Just the sound of a flathead cranking over is exciting. Couldn't let it run too long because didn't put the generator/fan back on yet, but shut it off and started up again about five times and revved it up a few times and it was pretty smooth.
So now I'll drain the gas tank and put some fresh in it. The fuel pump leaks, so I suppose it needs a rebuild. And I need a used little air filter and plain oil fill cap. It has some sort of aftermarket PCV set up on it that gets in the way of the throttle (cruise control).
Hopefully in a couple days I can drive it to the end of the driveway and back!

Title: BARN FIND!!!!
Post by: JakesBackyard on August 07, 2008 3:17 am
:( No, unfortunately. I had a lot of family stuff going on last week and now I'm hard at an interior in a '38 Ford Tudor w/Flathead. And I've been working nights on some house repair work I had planned when I "couldn't do anything".
I got the fuel pump rebuild kit late last week, but haven't had time to put it in yet. And now I think I better get a carb kit. I start it up once or twice a day just for the fun of it and now it looks like it might leak also. Typical Holley!
I don't forsee driving it much this year, other than around town and to work a few times (close enough that I can tow it home again). I'll give it the good once over this winter and hopefully be able to drive it on some short trips next year. Of course that puts the "A" on the back list again. Oh well....It's all fun. :)
Title: DRIVEN!
Post by: JakesBackyard on August 08, 2008 4:33 am
:D Overhauled the fuel pump tonight. Drove it from the front garage to the back yard and then backed it into the garage again. Runs pretty good. Let it run for about 15 minutes and it was at about 170 degrees. The generator must have loosened up inside or something as the amp guage started to show a charge. It had showed a discharge before, didn't show a charge when running. When I revved it up a little and ran it at a higher rpm for a while the amp guage started to show a charge now.
It does have a couple of oil leaks though, after idling for that long. From the front of the pan and the rear. I suppose seals. The oil is pretty thin though. I'll put some straight 30w in it. Do they still sell STP. I don't think I've used that since the 60's!
Now I've got to drain the gas tank and get some good gas in it. Maybe get it licenced next week and take it around the block. Vroom Vroom.

Jake, Don’t forget to grease the rear axle bearings. They don’t get any lube from the ring and pinion. Should be some zerks right next to the backing plates.
Title: BARN FIND!!!!
Post by: JakesBackyard on August 11, 2008 3:38 am
Thanks for the info Tom. I'm sure there are all kinds of zerks to grease under there. Not like the cars of today. I still like to change my own oil on all my cars.....and whille I'm under there grease and check everything out.....but there are no zerks. This should be fun.
Drained the gas tank today and put in a few gallons of Premium. Hooked up all the lines with a filter in line. Drove to the backyard again and cleaned out the inside a little. Cut out the headliner as it was drooping pretty well. Will get license tomorrow and maybe take a little cruise around the block.
It makes me feel like I'm about 16 again.....well almost..... :D

Title: BARN FIND!!!!
Post by: JakesBackyard on August 13, 2008 2:31 am
:( It was a little hairy for about an hour last night when the last couple inches (of seven) came down in about 10 minutes. Backyard was under water, shop had about an inch in it (everything high and dry), and the water was up about three feet into the boulavard. We had a little seepage in one corner of the basement, but kept that at bay and headed to the sump. Had to plug all the basement sewer lines which is a pain, but better safe than sorry. I never want to experience '97 again. Spent most of the day putting the basement back together and cleaning up the yard and such.
But ended the day with about a half hour cruise in the '35. :D Most of it spent in the big parking lots at the college. Lots of room to check it out. Fun! I will think more seriously about hydraulic brakes. Mechanical ones are not much to rely on. I'm getting pretty good at double clutching from second back into first though. HO HO HO.
Title: HELP need to get rear drums off...
Post by: JakesBackyard on October 20, 2008 9:28 pm
Got the '35 up in the air on jack stands and started to remove the drums to look things over....fronts easy...rears on real good....read some tech on the hamb and I guess you need a special puller or a special nut driver and BFH....I've got the BFH, but need a puller or one of those special nuts.
Any of you got something I can borrow???? Or an idea that will work???
Thanks in advance
By the way....I think the '35 is headed in this direction...see pic....

You get them "Flathead Ted" brakes installed??
Title: BARN FIND!!!!
Post by: JakesBackyard on November 24, 2008 8:00 pm
I got all the new pads installed, everything cleaned up, all the Flathead Ted parts in, drums turned, new wheel studs (longer to accept the spacers being made so I can use regular wheels), bearings packed, new grease zerks (including the rear axle ones - thanks), all reinstalled, three connecting rods all adjusted with new supports, and looking to a 6pm test drive last night when on the last connecting rod (LR) things went south.
Broke the end off the connecting rod! No big deal...I'll just take it off from the other end like I did the fronts and weld a bolt on the end....NO!! The front end of the rear rods is a real headache to get at...Up high in front of the X. And the pin is not budging....So after swearing quite a while, I juiced it up good, and had a beer and cigar! So I'll look at it fresh tonight and hopefully at least get it apart. Looks like both rear rods need to have the front ends rebuilt and a new pin.
Title: BRAKES!
Post by: JakesBackyard on December 01, 2008 1:26 am
So after getting the rear brake connecting rods out, I rebuilt the front eyes, the adjusting end of one and made a new pin for the front. Got it all back together and took a test drive Fri. afternoon.
Not great....maybe a little better than before the big rebuild....
So I tightened up the adjustment on all four wheels and took another test drive.....WOW, it worked. The brakes now stop the car about 200% better and I can actually lock up the left rear. So after they have worn in with a little more driving, and just a hair more adjustment on the other three they should be great.
It was a little work, but less time and money than converting to juice and they really work nice now.
Title: '35 Wheel Spacers
Post by: JakesBackyard on December 08, 2008 2:16 am
Here's the spacers the machine tooling dept. is making me so I can mount solid, later year steel wheels on the '35. The hubs have a small risen nub inside the bolts and match up with the '35 wires. This spacer raises the outer rim even with the raised nub to make a flat surface. I added longer lugs to compensate. It's about 7/32" thick.
Title: Reversed EYE
Post by: JakesBackyard on December 08, 2008 2:29 am
Took the front spring out of the '35 this weekend. Tore it apart and reversed the eyes by pressing the main leaf flat first and then reversing the bend to match the old arc. Used a press. Got all the info from a couple posts on the HAMB. Also took out three leaves. Ended up with the front 2" lower. Just what I was after. Worked pretty well and nothing seems to be too close to bottoming out. Forgot to take pics before and during, but here's the spring after reversing and the car alot lower in front. :D

That's the possible shape of skirts in the future. And you don't have to wait till the snow is gone (that might be a while)....the fridge is always stocked. I wondered if you and Pete had dissapeared???

Post by: JakesBackyard on January 26, 2009 2:37 am
Here's what I've been working on this winter. The engine bay of the '35. I tore off most everything that unbolted and scraped, wire brushed and cleaned it all and painted. Installed new points, distr. caps, plugs, plug wires, much of the wiring, hoses, belts, had the rad. cooked and checked, put in that rad. check valve. I swear the car is at least 50 lbs. lighter after all the crud I've scraped off the underside and engine bay. I took it for a little ride this afternoon. Still runs good!
Here's a pic of before and a few now.

Post by: JakesBackyard on April 14, 2009 9:31 pm
As usually happens, I've gotten way deeper into this project than I had planned. It's now apart down to the bare body on the frame and drive train.
But it's far enough that we got it in primer today. One good coat of epoxy and then (the "Overhaulin" way)....FIVE coats of polyester primer. Now a bunch of block sanding...hopefully I can get the body in color and back together before BTT50's....good luck....I'm not 30 any more.....

I wanted to paint it in single stage urethane to have the old paint look, but PPG only offers most old colors in the premium ($) Global base coat line. I played with Omni single stage and can match it spot on, but it needs to go over black. So it's somewhat transparent which does not lend itself well to painting pieces. I even had the PPG color lab play with it, trying for single stage and they gave up as well. So I'm not sure what I'll do, but will decide which way to go within the next week.

For obvious reasons I use PPG. It's what we teach. But if I could find another brand of single stage urethane or acrylic enamel that matched, I'd consider it. I'd like to single stage it to be similar to what was offered in the 40s. Alkyd - no thanks...not that similar.
Here's the PPG match - #916040. A Ferrari color called Masolac. Original Ford color - IM 1471 - Coach Maroon.
If you have any ideas....Talk to me Reed.....Thanks.

I'm a little surprised that NDSSS only teaches PPG. That seems like a disservice to the students.
BASF (RM, Glasurit), Akso-Nobel (sikkens-utech), Dupont (Spies Hecker, Nason, Standox), Sherwin Williams (Martin Senior, Acme, Western), all have very good single stage urethanes and most should be able to cross reference color numbers or paint codes or have chip books by shade and color. They all should be compatible with your 2K undercoat system.
I recently went down to the Sikkens jobber and used their "color-map" book to match a color in single stage. I have also used Dupont's color book by shades. If I find a matching chip, I check the formula for poor hiding toners or tints before I move on to getting a small amount for shooting a test panel.
Title: BARN FIND!!!!
Post by: JakesBackyard on April 16, 2009 4:02 pm
We went to one paint line (three systems) about 6 years ago. Like Reed says, systems have become very compatable. The amount of waste (75 students most years) with one line is bad enough, but with our old two lines (six systems) it was unbelievable. And our labs run production projects (off the street) that must pay for the products used. The state of ND does not fund our production accounts.
At the price of paint, waste is a big issue. The more lines you have, the more problems and waste. Remember, we're dealing with the typical 18-22 year old (50-75 of them a year) in the learning stage. They come here to learn auto body, but we hope auto body is at least 4th on their priority list. Right after drinking, partying and sex.
Urethanes, being the main paint systems used in most shops, all spray very similar to each other. We try to teach the individual products generically and don't make students memorize product numbers. So when they go out into a shop they know the general products and can adapt to the specific line.
We have Global (premium) bc/cc, Omni (economy) bc/cc, and Omni single stage. These seem to cover all our needs well and the jobber service plays a big part of the mix. Other companies are welcome to come in and demo and explain their product lines. It would be next to impossible to teach all product lines and systems.
As for that specific color, Coach Maroon. I've checked the "color map" to no avail. It is an EXTREMELY dark maroon. Almost black. Had the PPG color lab try for an Omni SS match (to no avail) and even tried custom mixing myself. Like I said, I can do it but only over black and I'm not sure I want to go that way with a single stage.
It's not a big deal, just a passing dip in the road. :)

Thanks for the clarification. I was concerned about the single brand exposure. I have been in 30 or 40 auto body tech schools over the years and probably a couple thousand body shops. Several times I have actually had to retrain experienced painters to use a system because they were extremely "brand" oriented. My main method was to cover the labels on the reducers, hardners, and paint, and actually label them with a marker with just the words: PAINT--REDUCER---HARDNER. Removing the labels and product numbers made the products extremely generic. Then it was easier to concentrate on mixing ratios, which was usually the main difference in product.
As far as Coach Maroon color, if you want the fast way to find a urethane match for the color in single stage, go to the best source in the world---HAMB. I have found that everything I need (except hi capacity magazines and ammo) is on ebay. Everything I need to know or find out is on the HAMB. I'm pretty sure someone has already done it. There you have it---"The Secret of Life Revealed".

Going to NDSCS, that sounds about right. Oh, shit. Dad reads this, doesn't he?
 I was hoping readers would catch that. That's probably the one characteristic that has remained constant in the 31 years I've been doing this. And it's still fun.
Title: ON HOLD!
Post by: JakesBackyard on May 09, 2009 8:20 pm
I woke up 3 weeks ago today and couldn't hardly move. Back was out as happens a couple times a year. Not even close to this though. By late that day I could hardly walk or sit. Usually a couple trips to the chiropractor and it's back to normal. Not this time. I had back surgery this past Thurs. and home yesterday. Feeling much better, but basically won't be able to do much normal stuff for three months. At least will be back to normal (hopefully) for school in the fall.
So when I got laid up, the '35 was getting blocked and ready for paint. Two students have been helping with it at school. So while I was laid up (flat on my back), they got it final sanded and squirted it last week. I just got to see it today. Looks great. :D
So it's pretty much on hold for the summer. Only the body and doors are done. I'll have to get back to it next fall. Hopefully I can find some small stuff to putz with on it over the summer.

Title: Moving forward again.

So anything new with this one Jake?
The '35 has been moving forward again. Slowly, but coming along. The back reherniated at the 9 wk. out point. I opted for no surgery this time....getting steroid shots to kill the pain and watching what I do, especially the lifting (20lbs. equals one case). Hopefully time will heal it.
So I've been working as I can on the '35. This fall we started a "Specialty Auto Body" 3rd year option for auto body students who have completed a regular program. They supply their own "specialty" vehicle as a project in lab and we give some specialized training in four areas - Auto Trim/Upholstery, Sheet metal fabrication, MIG/TIG welding, and Custom Painting.
So two of the students didn't have their own project....."welcome to this '35 Ford" So it has been a learning project for them with help and instruction from me. They are learning students so the learning curve is a little slow, but it is progressing. I've been putting in some outside hours on it to finish up some stuff.
It now has the first cut and buff done, the floor is all patched up, treated and painted, windshield frame is painted, glass in and we're now working on the roof insert. The fenders are blasted, so now we'll get into mounting that flip fuel filler door and the '40 tail lights. Still looking for the '49 Plym. bumpers.
And yes, Joel, by hook or crook it will be on the road by summer!
I'll try get some pics up next week.

I was the first to graduate the 3rd year 'Specialty Interest Vehicle Technology' course in 2003 at Minnesota West in Granite Falls, MN. It grew to have a lot of student interest in the years but unfortunately only lasted until a couple of years ago. It was a great program with great instructors, but the school didn't feel it was necessary any longer. I hope you have more luck with it as kids need this stuff. I can't wait to see this one finished...

Yes Joel, she'll get the original seats rolled and tucked with some distressed dark brown faux leather. Hopefully it'll look like old bomber jacket leather.

I want to wait till I get the Lincoln one. I plan a 46 on the rear so I will let you know. They don't look to bad the rear is better than the front. I think both have been replated at one time.

Title: Skirts!
Post by: JakesBackyard on December 04, 2009 2:17 am
Since I’ve never been able to get those “good deal on ebay†skirts to fit the ‘35 right (they’re designed for 37-40), I decided to make a pair for it. I had saved the roof skin from an ‘88-‘99 reg. cab PU last year with this in mind. I picked up another roof skin and two of the AB Specialties students and I set to work making a set of skirts the past few class days.
Here’s the two skins. Then drew an outline of the shape on the fender and used the old 4 mil clear vinyl trick lightly glued to the fender to transfer the outline. Laid the vinyl onto the skins and added 1" to the bottom for a flange and ½" to the outer edge to flange over. Cut it out with an electric shear.
Title: Skirts!
Post by: JakesBackyard on December 04, 2009 2:21 am
Using a brake, a 90 degree flange was bent in the bottom edge. Then the bottom edge was shrunk with a shrinker to give it a gentle arc to match the purchased skirts.
Title: Skirts!
Post by: JakesBackyard on December 04, 2009 2:23 am
A tipping die was used on the bead roller to get the outer 1/4" flange to 90 degrees. (1/4" was used instead of the ½" that had been allowed as it is easier to get with that arc.) 1/4" fine line tape was used as a guide for the first pass; then removed for the rest of the passes. It takes about 3 passes total, putting upward pressure as it moves around. Once it’s to 90 degrees it gets a few shrinks with the shrinker all around the outer edge. Then it must be hammered down the rest of the way.
Title: Skirts!
Post by: JakesBackyard on December 04, 2009 2:26 am
Once the bottom and outer flanges were done, the outer edge was shrunk many times to put a little crown in it. Then the skirts were run through the english wheel to smooth out any wrinkles and give a slight bubble shape. Almost flat anvils were used on the wheel. All through the process the skirts were test fit on the car.....many, many times.
Title: Skirts!
Post by: JakesBackyard on December 04, 2009 2:29 am
When the fit was good a fastening system had to be made. Here’s what we came up with: “flattened†“Z†brackets for around the arch of the wheel opening (5 of them with two plug welds each) and a button headed bolt in the front and rear of the bottom edge of the skirt to the flange of the fender. The rear bolt also holds the fender brace.
Title: Skirts!
Post by: JakesBackyard on December 04, 2009 2:31 am
There will still be some fine tuning and smoothing, but here’s how they look.

Thanks for the comments guys. It's been a fun project. Hopefully the students are getting some good experience with it.
We've picked up a few metal working tools the past couple of years that are making this possible. Budgets are tight this year so maybe I'll use it for a tech. week on the HAMB and we can add to the tools if we win.
The '35 is still never going to be a "great" car, but hopefully a fun '40s driver. That's the plan.
If there's a way to copy the posts over to the Tech. section - go ahead, but I'd also like to keep it here.
I'll take the car home for XMAS break and hopefully get going on the interior.

Title: How low can you go?
Post by: JakesBackyard on February 23, 2010 2:46 am
So I wanted to bring the rear of the '35 down a little. Less of the wheel to show with the skirts on. 2 inches would be nice.
1. Romoved spring. 2. reversed the eyes. 3. removed the two top short springs. 4. New '41 shackles (they're 5/8" longer than the '35-'40).
I figured it would yeild about 2"......Holy crap - it went down 3" and the brake rods bound up with the exhaust.
So tonight I put the old shackles back in. Now the rods clear the exhaust. Hopefully it doesn't sink too much farther with the rest of the weight on and in the car....I don't like the thought of removing the spring again and adding a leaf back on top.
God, I love old cars!

Hey your draggin' out all the old tricks, of course it takes an old guy to know them. :P I know you have taken them out, but didn’t they recommend using a panhard bar if you went to the longer schackles??

The '41s are safe. They still used the same set up as '35-'40 and are only 5/8" longer. If you use the '42-'48 you should add a pan hard bar.

When I got the '35 all four shocks were missing. I suppose at sometime in its life they froze up and someone just took them off. I picked up good used ones for the front, but have never found a reasonable set of rears that work. The rears are a 35-36 rear only. So I kept looking for a pair of the old Gabriel tube shock kit towers. Got a pair of fronts and they looked just like the rears. Not so lucky....they wouldn't work. So I fabbed and welded a pair similar in nature to the Gabriels. She's back on the ground and just clears a beverage can under the tailpipes. Hopefully the rear fenders will go back on this week.

No. There are a few things to do to the outside yet and next up is to tear out the rear end and put in 3.25 gears. That's a pretty big task on the '35. I'm thinking the torque tube enclosed driveshaft rearend was not one of Henry's brightest ideas. What a pain in the ass to get out of the car! And I'm planning on it being a bigger pain to get it back in. I've got it all apart now and will clean it up before putting in the new 3.25 gears. Everything looks good except one bearing and it just has a little chip in one roller. Wish it was back together for a little cruising in this nice weather.

Title: Re: BARN FIND!!!!

Man, that's a loaded question...
I'm not sure what to use in the rear for lube. Looks like a lot of people use the newer synthetic. It's some heavy stuff and now that I have it apart I can see why. It lubes all the rear end bearings except the outters on the axles.

I just read a few weeks ago that Ford had a special heavy lube that is available from some of antique stores. I used 80-90 in the RPU and it very slowly seeps out around the bell gaskets. Not a big deal as it easy to get at to clean off. Don't think I would use synthetic.
Yes the out side bearing needed to be greased. One of the reasons you have a hard time finding good outside bearings and races is that people didn't grease them.

Well the story of the '35 comes to a close for me. Sold it to a guy in Austrailia. Loaded on a transport this afternoon. Had lots of trade offers from the states and the usual low baller offers, but nothing really turned my crank. It's a pretty soft market right now if you watch th HAMB classifieds.
