I have used this setup on two cars and others have used it based on my success with it but this CAN happen. I still would use this setup too. The spring mounts used in this one look much smaller than the ones I have used. But it is something to keep in mind.

thanks for posting that, its good to get a reality check once in a while to remind us how dangerous things can be

I saw that yesterday. Scary! I'm guessing probably some poor welding or like you mentioned, some inferior parts without enough strength.
When I read it yesterday, the guy had still not responded to any of the questions. I did a little searching and I think he bought it like it was. Goes to show there is some scary stuff getting built by inexperienced and unqualified people who don't search out the "right way". And then being bought by unknowing newcomers.
I've always shyed away from cars with a lot of work done by inexperienced and unknowlegable people. Did an interior quite a few years ago that was built using 1/2 inch drive (for wratchet/socket use) u-joints for the steering column joints! I wonder if Craftsman would warranty those?
You've got to check something out good if you buy from someone you don't know.
One more reason for a NSRA inspection.
I'll quit now.....

perhaps this is why they call it a suicide front end.
-
i saw that yeasterday also

Kevin Gribble had one of those single mono front springs break when there were on the way to CA. His car shot into the ditch as the frame landed on top of the front axel. He said if it would have went the other way he would not be here to tell the story as he would have been head on into traffic. They were in a construction zone and it was bumper to bumper traffic. It happens so fast you don't have time to compensate with the steering. This is still better than a suicide style, the frame won't dig into the ground and flip you over. In Kevin's case the found a heavy piece of plastic, put it between the frame and ax and drove the car to a place where they installed a new spring.
-
I suppose the spring is the only thing keeping that axle located from side to side, eh? That'd be scary.
And how about that "scrub line?"
-
I think even with a panhard bar you would have some movement.
The black `36 roadster that was in the Toppers show also broke one of those spring and he was in CA. He shot to the left across two lanes of traffic (missed everybody) and into a guard rail, messing up the fenders on the drivers side. Again had it been suicide it probably would have been a lot worse.
My modified has a suicide front. I do look things over once and a while, but I think I'm just fooling my self.

On that note. You can not believe how unrealistic people are about their cars. I have a guy here that had a problem with his gauge cluster. The HR meter had reset to zero. He wants GM to buy the truck back cuz it is a lemon and he has over 30k on it......wtf. I love my job. Oh another one is a guy is running Mobil 1 in his car. He changes the filter every 4k and the oil every 15K! He has to ad ½ - ¾ qt every 4k and wants us to “fix†it………I need a vacation. :)
-
The car business = suck.....just ask my father!
-
"The car business = suck"
Not necessarily the car business, but the "People Business".
-
He has to ad ½ - ¾ qt every 4k and wants us to “fix†it………I need a vacation. :)

Tell those dumbasses to buy Rolls Royces. They probably wouldn't have those problems.
