Title: Brake booster trouble
Post by: Briggs&Stratton on April 09, 2008 5:10 am
Ive got a problem with the brake booster on my 68 galaxie.  When the engine is running and I step on the brakes, the booster makes a fairly loud squeaking/sucking sound. The sound comes from the back of the booster near the firewall. Where the rod goes into the booster, there is a rubber boot and when the brake pedal is depressed it sucks the rubber boot in and that is what makes the squeaking sound.

I asked about this on the hamb and I got one response, and that person said that the diaphram is leaking if it continuously makes that sound.  But since it only does this when the brakes are applied, maybe its something else?

The booster in question was rebuilt about 3 years ago (I brought it to carquest and they sent it in).  I just talked to them about this and they said take it off and they will send it back in.  That would be alright but im putting the car in prime steel this weekend and I need the booster otherwise I wont have brakes.

So im just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and knows what is going on, or maybe someone has an idea?

Otherwise, I guess im just gonna have to squeak the hell out of the alerus! haha

Chris

i would bet that the bladder is toast, its leaking internally.  if 9i recall, there is a valve in the booster that when you hit the brakes it engages the vacum, or else it would suck the master cylinder shut all the time, and the brakes would never come off.

Plug the vacuum and just have manual brakes. It'll get you through the car show. Other than that, I'm out of ideas. . .

I would agree, the booster is shot & unhook the vac line for the show. You'll just have to push like a s.o.b on the pedal. I had the same problem on my '59 Cad.
