I love John Deere combines too. Well maybe not enough to have one in my avatar. But, they do have a link to hotrods.
The Model 55 combines have steering drag links that are the same as mid 30's to early 40's Fords. And if you need a 12 inch pitman arm for your side steer "T" Track Roadster so you can cruise the Salt Flats, Old John will gladly give up his parts. I'm sure if you study the anatomy of the John Deere you will find many potential hotrod parts lurking in the big Green frame.
Tom knew that the mid 60's self propelled John Deeres would occationally be equipped with a sealed motorolla alternator (about 30 amps). A trip to the alternator repair shop, and the promise of cash, yeilded this "gem" of a hotrod accessory.
It was ugly green and connected to a remote regulator. The alternator guru replaced the bearings and a diode and installed an adjustable output mini regulator and converted it to "one wire" operation. Parts about $55, Labor about $38, Alternator saved from the recycler about $15. A Little over a 100 bux and we are combine "COOL".
If you didn't "thrash" it with your own hands-you didn't really "combine" it.

Yes, all kinds of good parts to be had off of farm machinery.

DON"T make me come down there!!
Talk like that ain't even funny!
I had to (working at the BOC dealer) paint a nice 34 Ford rod JD Green for a guy in Bismarck. The car was built back in the 70's here in Bismarck. The guy that owns it now is about 2 1/2 bubbles out of PLUMB. He also has a Suburban painted JD Green, which he complimented by brush painting the interior, INCLUDING floor matts, JD Green. He even has a JD Green cowboy hat.

Are you sure the "guy in Bismarck" isn't you? BTW when are we going to see some pics of the SUPER SECRET project?
-
I know of who he speaks!! The guy was in a car accident when he was a teen, parents had lots of money, and they keep him inline as long as they were alive. After they died he really got goofy. Painted every thing JD green. Even the tires on his suburban.
Hey Reed do you know what happened to the `34 4 door??

what is a 12 pitman arm? Im guessing its 12 inch or 12 spline?
Are there any good parts on a JD "turtleback" combine? We've got one of those in the trees at the farm, but I know a tree fell on the main body chunk. Theres a 1960's pull type JD too, I think its a 65 (66?), I should check out the alternator. I know the motor is a straight 6.
-
also on the topic of JD green, Kenny Anderson said that one time a younger guy came in the shop wanting his 57 nomad painted jd green with a jd yellow top! He even showed up with a couple buckets of paint! Im pretty sure he said he convinced him out of it.
-
yeah, is it a 12" arm on that model 55? Cuz I'm gonna find one (or 4) if thats what you're talking about.

Still in the garage. I'll bet it ain't put 25 miles on the street since I painted it. The 2-tone blue velour interior clashes just a wee bit with the Green outside.

Edit to "12 inch". Yup, better check out the old JD. It could have some neat goodies.

I'm trying to get his place on the NDSRA garage tour next year.

You can hook your JD Suburban to this and haul your JD 34 around.
