Here are a few pics. the lower control arms I had to offset 2". The uppers hand to lengthen 1 1/2". More pics to follow when I get more done.
-
Why did you have to offset them?
-
Bags are good! it'll be cool to see them on a '40! I've got a wagon that needs 'em....
-
my guess is so they dont hit the frame. si tom?
-
Yes Ross that's right. The frame is `40 chevy with the crossmember from the 64 chevy rear welded inbetween, inorder for it to clear I had to off set it,. I'll take a pic and post it.
-
Here's the of the lower arm installed
-
Got the lower and upper plates made to hold the bags.
I know what your thinkin', only 1/8 in thick plate??!! All it has to do is hold the bag in place, it's the cup behind it when it's mounted that supports the weight.
Had to C notch the cross member to clear the drive shaft. Sucks to weld upside down laying on your back!! :x
-
The welds look good for upside down shirt on fire red hot slag in ears welding. :albino:
-
Looking good Tom, but is that control arm going to be strong enough without gussets or sleeves?

Good question Mr. President. I should take a nother pic from the bottom side. The heavy plate that runs to the back is where the sway bar bolts too, that's why I didn't angle metal back like I did on the top. Instead I put a peice inside which you dont see in the pic. Plus that 350 CI motor dosen't have that much balls.
-
350? not a four cylender ;)
-
ha ha Ross, not everything I got is four cyl.
Bolo...........what do think?
-
those look like they will be plenty strong to me.
-
I concur.
-
What size bags are you using? (Diameter and overall compressed and inflated heights) I want to put bags on my '50 but don't know the first thing about air suspension and I'm too cheap (broke) to buy a complete kit. I figured the bags I can buy, the brackets etc... a guy can make, like you are doing. By the way, looks good so far. Nice welding for up side down. Keep the pics coming so we get more ideas.
-
Got the ones on the left. They have less lift but will clear the frame. So far I got $450.00 into it. Should be done at around $500.00. I'll post more pics when I get it done. This is my 1st time with air ride too, so will see how it goes.
-
UPDATE!
-
Drove it on Sat. I have to take some pics. Will do an update maybe tommorow.
-
Couple of shitty pics. one at ride height and one aired out. Ride height is about one inch lower that before. Going to get smaller tires for the rear, should bring it down one or two more inches.
-
Beautiful.
-
Beautiful.
ditto. I've never seen that car. Love the color and the stance will be niiiicccce.
-
I like it! It should give it a little more "kustom" and a little less "hot rod"!
-
Thanks guys.
I hope to have a lot more kustom, 53 chevy dash, skirts, different headlight treatment, rechop the top, `41 stude tailights, door and deck lid gaps closer, and maybe a few more things.
-
It's lookin good! I never realized it must have set pretty high before.
What kind of tires are you looking for? I've got 4 DBClassics 195/65R15s (I know - they're radials.) with 12,000 miles on them. Whitewalls are not perfect on two, but other two are good. Long story - they're off the PT. Got four new ones I'll mount in a month or so.
Fantastic! I was going to give you a hard time about you should put skirts on it and didn't.
It'll look pretty nice..... for a Chevy, then.
-

It will look dam nice, Fords are for HOT RODS and Chevys are for KUSTOMS!!!
-
sure --now i supoose you'll want to sell those rear tires to me
-
Looks good here is a shitty photo shop of some skirts.
-

Your on the list, you still need them??
-
.......and here is vintage Tom next to his ride. :)
-
Thanks Tim. Did you use the aired out pic?? Cause if you did I'm going to have to get it lower. :x
-
Yes I did. Is the axle resting on the frame?
-
Tim....keep going....lower the rear a little more, white top, white running boards, white interior......I'm getting excited.
-
My skills and software will not allow it at work.
-
Yes I did. Is the axle resting on the frame?
No it's on the snubbers, about 3/4" between the housing and the frame. Might have to C notch it, don't know if the bage would collapse that far.
Sorry Jake, the running boards will stay black.
-
can the top please be white? It'd be a whole new car!!
-
yep lower it. it looks leval to me
-

Since it sounds like you're doing a fair amount of bodywork already might I suggest re doing your bags?
A tube notch with a bridge, and then you can mount the bags to the bridge. But if you make it go much lower I think you're going to have to change your link bars so your pinion angle is set right at ride height. Personally even if you're using the original mounts I would've bought some bushings and some smaller square tubing and made a link bar.
-
Heres a taildraggin chop.
-
Pete...........yes the top will be white
Tyrell........thank for the photo chop.
I lied......... I changed snubbers NOW it has about one inch before the axle will hit the frame. Wont go any lower, the bags are collapsed all the way. Will have to redo it this fall after I get back from the pile-up
Here's a couple of pics with as low as it goes and cardboard skirts. Had Char come out and look at it. She hates the fact that I'm turning into a sled. Her comment, not low enough, back to the drawing board as they say.
-
I think you might get enough with smaller tires to get it there, but I keep looking at the pics and there is an "illusion" that the top is going down hill forward. The white top would help also.
Most coupes/sedans that are built as heavy customs have more wacked out of the rear of the roof verses the front to give the "illusion" of more tail draggin. Most of the convertibles of that era had "Carson" styled roofs to give that illusion because it is darn tuff to chop a convertible (you probably know this already) and have it work right.
Would it be possible to wack the rear bow any more without messing up the geometry? Just a thought.
-
Jake, that's exactly what I plan to do. I have chopped the windshield post 2" , which makes for a vertical chop, if I remember right, of about 3 in. The back bow I left stock and the two bows in the middle came down with the front header. The middle bows set so high that people don't realize that it's been chopped. The plan is rework the two middle bows and drop the back bow also to give it more of a Carson look and still fold back.
Your right, any time you move mounting points, things change. I took a while to get it all working right. I made my folding top for my roadster too. I don't I think I would try a top that had rear 1/4 windows, that adds another step to the mechanism and I getting to old for all that frustration!!
When I built the car I did it with a forward rake and it gave it the look I wanted. Now I have to reverse everything I did then. This time with the body on the frame!!!
-
Tom I think its amazing how you can turn a car that was an amazing street rod into what will be an amazing kustom....very few cars get to have that transformation in their lifetime. Another club member wit da skillz!
-
Tom - check out this page - some nice old chev customs. And if you back up to all his albums you find all kinds of old pics.

How about this example?
-
How about this example?
Yes you'll note, look at the rocker angle........... just a slightly lower to the rear. Back in the day, before bags, they weren't that low in most cases.
Now for the top, no way can I get that low of a profile, and still have a workin' top. This is also a newer and longer car than mine so mine will never look that long.
Looks like I'm going to have find a pair of spot lights.
Thanks Jake, for the old pics, if you find any more sendem my way.
-
Carson top.............and please if you must use spots no dummies.
-
Carson top.............and please if you must use spots no dummies.
Sorry, no Carson top. If I wanted a hard top that's what I build. :)
And yes REAL spots, not the dummy type. I think there is still a hole for a spotlight under the replaced garnish molding on the left side.
-
Those are from that site I gave you earlier. I'm not familiar with the name (Barry Mazza), but from his pics I assume he worked for Barris.

I thought you were all excited about that one from VLV a few years ago?
-
Yes , for inspiration, but not a clone.................sorta like the Henderson roadster was for you. :)

Came across this looking for some parts for the '35. I know they are for a Ford, but I think they might work. Check it out. Click the link and then go to page 107. (catalog page 107)
