The "normal" destination is Nebraska followed by a car show. This year it is Bville...no car show.

Yeah, I saw that too. Wait till they have to drive on to the salt, bet half of them wont. Also saw on the HAMB yesterday someone couldn't find rooms, he had called the 4 big casino and they were all booked. It's the 60th anniversary too!!

Yes I did.......at the Super 8. All they had left was a couple of smoking rooms when we called at 8AM Jan 1. I tried at 4:00 am and the night clerk could not take reservations, call back at 8. Had to let the phone ring forever, then the gal says " why didn't you get room when you were here in Aug of 2007", told her we tried and you wouldn't take res then. No she said we try to take care of our regular customers. WTF!!!

The KOA campground is in town, your typical KOA.
At the bend in the road they set up two por-a-podies and that's it. The farther you camp from them, the better chance you have of sleeping. But if you get to far away and it rains you may get stuck. The days are hot but the nights cool down about the time you stop drinking beer. :wink:
There is no charge at the bend in the road.

Camping at the bend was great! The truck stop (2 or 3 miles away) has showers and there is usually a line for them so that kinda sux but we lucked out last year and didn't have to wait too long. The porta johns were kept clean too.
Kinda missed the motel room A/C in the late afternoon but it was still something I would do again.

No....... everyone gets kicked off the salt a night. The bend in the road is on the way out to the salt flats about a mile off the interstate. There is not much salt at the bend. And yes you set up your tent wherever. Keep in mind that it's really spread out. At the end of the road to the salt ( which is passed the bend and where you pay to get on) it might be 4 miles to the start line. Than the pits are 2 to 3 miles from that. Ya gotta have some way to get around.It can be your daily driver, or hot rod, it dosen't matter . Some bring pedal bikes to drive round in the pits.

Yeah...........if he shows up this year I'm going to drive out to the 7 or 8 mile mark. Lets hope the salt is good enough for that!!

I called the nugget today and told them that a Mr. Ebens from Moorhead, MN sold me his room for $200. Not only do I get the room, but your deuce roadster too because of the lawsuit that I'll win concerning fraudulent sales of hotel rooms by a Mr. Eyeball.

Yes, I was out there with the chevelle on my way home from Cali. It was gorgeous. It was flooded, so I just drove off along the road, and it was pretty soft. Got the car on the salt at least a little. Washed it off at the next stop. I'm kinda sick though, I've been looking for the pictures from Bonneville for a half hour and I can't find them. :(

" 06/30/08: Our advance team have returned from their first trip to the salt to begin lying out our courses for SpeedWeek 08. As of this date we have three courses set up. 1 long (5 mile) and 2 short (3 mile). Salt was dry and hard. More to follow in the weeks to come. "

Your canopy & chairs balance between you on the first day out. Once the canopy framing is set, all you have to carry out the next days are your chairs, canopy cover, cooler, lots 'o H2O, snacks, BIG HAT, camera.
I was telling Patti this weekend that we've been packing sandwhiches for during the day. We get on the salt about 9-ish and return about 7-ish & the vendors are too expensive to eat @ during the day. Things that you don't need to over-exert yourself with cuz it's too damn hot.

I hear its a bit humid at bonneville, so I'm not looking forward to that, but I loved the hot and dry. 120+ is still f'ing hot though, no matter how dry it is.

Yeah............the SCTA guys at the start line where white long sleeves shrits and white long pants. I have even seen them with finger gloves on too. To bad about there hats, they have baseball type caps because of the head sets they have on.

I still have my old CB, I'll see if I can get that going. We also need a couple of ( I think AM) radios to listen to the track anouncer.
Wouldn't hurt to bring with thouse hand held family band radios. I have two and I think Tim's has two.

There are two CB channels that the tower uses to talk to the race teams and they also broadcast on AM. Seems like every year there is some dill weed that leaves his mike keyed and screws everything up for a bit.

07/23/08: A note regarding our 2nd Pre-Trip July 20-23
Trip went well. (Almost) On Sunday the 20th, as we traveled, it rained all through Las Vegas and a lot through ELY up through White Horse Pass just South of Wendover. It cleared up by Wendover and had not rained at all there.
Monday we spent all day setting up and dragging. Salt was Hard, Dry and Smooth, Weather was in low 90’s and overcast.
We completely finished the Long Course (8 mi) and had both the Short Courses ready to go to begin dragging again on Tues. morning. It Thundered and Lighting most of the night (Monday night) but no rain fell in “Downtown†Wendover.
Not so on the salt flats, there was considerable water standing across most of our race course areas and we had to call off any further work for this trip.
We decided to wait until we arrive just prior (A week) to the event to do the finishing touches on the courses. With no further rain ( the storm had passed through) in sight we feel that the water should be gone in a few days and the salt will be left in at least as good condition (Great) as it was prior to the storm.
As we left Wendover the weather was Clear and Hot (Of Course) We’ll keep you up dated from now until the event with reports as we get them. Be sure to check the SCTA / BNI web site for ACCURATE Up Dates.
