Post by: armstrong on January 16, 2007 1:16 am: I hope the city will hold the people who did this responsible,but I doubt it. It was probably done on purpose. Once the damage was done alot of the resistance would go away. Easier to pay some fines than fight public opinion. I was there on a late Sat night in 1987. The place was very busy even at 1 am. Serious was there too,he was 8 yrs old and fell asleep in the car and missed it. I wasn't even aware of the history of the place at the time! On that same trip we went to Ascot Speedway which is now also history. Progress can really suck.

We had been cruising Hollywood Blvd checking out all the late night freaks and cool cars when our guide, my brother in-law,took us out there. It was called Johnnies then. I had a hot pastrami sandwich and onion rings. The heartburn damn near killed me!

Update 01/10/07 - The Downey City Council met the evening of Jan 10. According to the Long Beach Press-Telegram article, the City Council expressed outrage and vowed to take action against those responsible for the illegal demolition. Many residents were present at the crowded council chambers and spoke up in favor of preserving what's left of Johnie's and/or rebuilding the coffee shop as well as expressed outrage at the events of January 7.
