well that was a while ago and since then i have worked on something else. but now i have decided to go back to the A before finishing(or starting) anything else.
so last weekend i held the fargo frame-up @ driven customs were a number of guys from the club helped me finish up on the frame rails and front & rear crossmembers, setup the spring behind axle front end and mock the body on the frame
so thats what i currently have, so next is the rear and wheels and tires so i have a roller and can get the pontiac 400 in those purdy frame rails

Title: hurts motor mounts
Post by: sko_ford on March 21, 2007 2:09 am
so i had a hard time find in a good side motor mount for a later pontiac mill. i had looked at some home built ones and thought that they were kinda plain looking. but some thing clicked when i saw the hurst mount that arch is useing on his nailhead powered A. i figured id try to find a set for the 400 and the ones that i did see werent as organic as the nailhead set. so i decided to fab a similar pair for my motor. luckly the bosses for the mounts on a pontiac block are perpendiclar to the ground, making the use of angle iron a fairly easy choice. i picked up a chunk of 3x3x3/8 stainless and some 3x1/4 bar stock. first i found were i wanted the biscut mount to go then i laid out the block mount holes on the other leg. after drilling these holes i rounded the corners and had hatz tig in the gusset for me.

Title: RE: seats

The backrests sit directly on top of the bottom cushions, but maybe you could squish'em a little and drop the backrests on the seat frames. Or just move the bottom cushions forward a few inches and drop the backrests all the way down.

You will have to toss that tape aside to see if your car has the correct "look" or "flow†body and frame lines can change the way it looks. My A sedan had the radiator taller than the cowl but your eye was not drawn to it cuz of the carbs breaking the line and when I put the radiator support rods in I mounted them lower on the radiator so they were.

With your body channeled so much, there may only be so much you can do to lower the grille shell. You may have to adjust (ie. raise) the body a bit. I have a 65 4 core mustang radiator. It's sitting ON the crossmember and my grille shell still sits higher than my cowl too. Unlike Eyeball and using his carbs to break up "the line," I had to use the gas tank to break the line (I didn't have a roof!). On my roadster, theres that imaginary line that goes from the lip on the back of my "cockpit" to the grille shell. I just made damn sure the gas tank broke that line. It's ok right now, but I will be modifiying the corners of the upper rad. tank so I can lower my shell another inch if needed. You may have to do the same. I'm trying to avoid raising the body to compensate, but you may have to fiddle with the front and rear height of your body just to make the radiator shell look right. My support rods will be used to maintain the flow I want the top of the body to have, but will be closer to the engine than the body "line" so the engine doesn't look like it's sitting so darn low. You can try my radiator if you need to play with it. It'll turn out great. Just gotta fiddle and stare at it alot!

I agree. Leaning the grills shell forward so It's almost vertical would change the look of the whole car a lot too.
Of course, do we neccessarily want all of our cars looking the same?

I think even if you shorten the spring you are still going to bottom out at that point. Is there any way to change the designe and hang it below or make a set like a modle A has on top of the axle.
Title: RE: Re: apart
Post by: Tom on April 02, 2008 2:31 pm
I agree with Tim, It needs to have full movement, my spring was so long that the shackles hung straight down. They need to be at about a 45 degree angle to the center of the car.
Title: RE: Re: apart
Post by: sko_ford on April 02, 2008 2:43 pm
to change it to hang below i'd have to cut about 4" out of the kick of the frame and to put it on top would put the u joint right next to my kidny and still wouldnt be far enought apart

Title: RE: Re: apart
Post by: racerjohnson on April 02, 2008 6:18 pm
Even if the springs were re-rolled so that the shackles were shallower at, say, 30 degrees instead of 45, wouldn't the spring hit that bracket in a bump or if the car rolled a bit in the corner?

Can't we just redesign the rearend brackets? They can be designed so they won't hit the spring. It'll be sort of a goose neck, but it'd work.

2 cut it on the seam at the bottom and cut the 4" out to meet the seam
3 cut the rear member out cut the verticle down make a new uper horizonal and re fit the cross member

Ross as promised. This dose work, I have a rubber snubber off the bottom of the spring that will hit the top of the banjo rear end before the springs hit the mounts. The spring has settled in time, when I first got it together the shackles where at more of a 45.

Post by: sko_ford on April 08, 2008 11:27 am
so have had marked to cut 4" out of the kick on the frame i decided that tonight was the night to give it the wack. and with the first cut it sprang a 1/2" from 33.75 on the bottom ro 34.25 on the top. so am i in the recycleing business or could i push that bottom out with a porta power and het the halfs to line up sleave it and weld'em back together?
Title: RE: scrap
Post by: Eyeball on April 08, 2008 2:10 pm
So I take it you did not weld supports in b4 you cut it? You should be able to get it back in alignment but does the bottom need to go out or the top in?
Title: RE: scrap
Post by: sko_ford on April 08, 2008 2:24 pm
the bottom is going to have to go out since thats where the flex is. i didnt think that there was as much stored energey as there was when it popped free
Title: RE: scrap
Post by: Eyeball on April 10, 2008 5:10 pm
Didja cut the other side yet? I looked at it last night and I think once you cut the other side and split the diff it should not need much of a push to come into alignment. I think a little push from a porta power and at the same time a bit of pull on the top and you should be good to go. I think it will be allot easier to pull the top in since it is just the model A cross member in there and the bottom has the GIANT X.

get some angle iron, cut notch them to the widths you need, and use a ratchet strap to pull it together and tack them on....

Title: RE: square
Post by: sko_ford on April 16, 2008 2:20 pm
x'es of tape. i have to releval the whole frame and check heights. really there isnt much i can do but make sure its level. the two haves were solid so there shouldnt be any real squareing

Title: RE: stubless
Post by: racerjohnson on June 02, 2008 5:13 am
Wouldn't one want to wait to paint the chassis until the whole car is mocked up or assembled? There are tabs here, brackets there. . . oh shit, this doesn't fit, gonna have to move the pedals, etc. Just my .02 and you're car will still probably be done before mine:)

peet all the brackets are on. the pedals are in the cowl the body mounts are nutserts on the top of the frame and i'm working on the shock mounts currently and the plumbing will be drilled and tapped after paint. so finish the rear end and its ready to squart if i screwed up oh hell lets fix it again.

If the body comes off the frame and depending on when you want it done; you get the body work pretty much done, primed and blocked once and I know a place where you might be able to get it finished up and squirted pretty cheap. (only shiney though) PM me if you're interested. :)

Title: RE: rocken
Post by: Eyeball on January 22, 2009 10:48 pm
I would not run it out the the body keep all the room you can inside the car plus it would be a shame to cover up that nice work. :) You could also run into a problem with it distoring the outer skin if any strange pressure is put on the body, ie someone leans on the car or frame twist.

ross i saw this on the hamb. this could be you.
Title: tape
Post by: sko_ford on February 21, 2010 6:45 am
the tape is not part of the turning process it was put on so i didnt mar the freshly surfaced face of the dash while i broke the bottom edge and rolled the top one.
as for the turning that was easy. 1 inch wire brush lapping each brush mark by half then moving my guide by a 1/2 inch thusly lapping it by half again and stagering each row so they didnt line straight up
Title: sko_ford's A mod
Post by: sixinarow on February 21, 2010 3:59 pm

i found out that the best primer gun i've used is my industrial 2.8 gal pressure pot from work, its got a devilbiss HVLP gun with a 2.0+ tip (cant remember for sure). there is so much adjustment with pressure you can get the primer to lay down extra smooth, plus with the pot you can mix an entire gallon at once, and without a cup on the gun you can shoot at any angle you want. its marvelous!

I think when we go to get the body, we should roll the frame outside since we got a clear path, take some photos, then put the body on and I'll get some good photos for everyone.

I guess in some peoples warped minds, yes. To us old farts it's just another shade of brown (....)!

I'm not supposed to post color photos of the car. But I'm not a man of high morals, I can be bribed...
Or you can just see it in person at the Suedes' Run.

Since 1997 every second year at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, they have included a hot rod class. This year's hot rod class was devoted to dry lakes racing cars. As always, this is one of our favorite events and it was just as spectacular as previous years. Making up the class was the Fred Carrillo roadster, the Spurgin-Giovanine roadster, the Crawford-Stoner roadster, the Jim Khougaz roadster, the Williams Brothers roadster, the Ralph Schenck streamliner, the Eddie Miller streamliner, the Chet Herbert streamliner, and the So-Cal Speed Shop bellytank.
Here are some of our snapshots from the event. Be on the lookout for full event coverage in an upcoming issue.
Crawford-Stoner 1932 Ford Roadster. Owner: Chuck Longley, Deland, Florida. Recently restored by Chuck Longley, the Crawford-Stoner roadster was selected as one of the top ten SCTA hot rods ever built. Ken Crawford who is shown sitting in the driver's seat remarked that he hadn't seen the car in 65 years. Interestingly, this car was first shown in the September 1947 issue of Look Magazine in a feature on dry lakes racing.

Glad to see it "fired"

Sweet!!!!!!!!!! Advance the timing a touch and it won't burp fire like that nor will you have to "inject" fuel either. On second thought, nevermind, that was fun to watch. . . :D
Funny story, I had a paint cap full of fuel I was dumping in my 427 BBC as my buddy fired the engine and it caught on fire. I didn't want to hold a flaming cup of liquid fire, so I tossed it . . . right at my girlfriend's leg. Kinda horrifying yet funny at the same time. . . dancin all over. . . lmao.

They had it running without the fire through the carb, but that wasn't as entertaining to watch.

So Ross had asked me to weld up his windshield posts for him, I bought the wire this week since I finally got my welder down here and decided I needed to get at least one of the things I wanted to get done this weekend completely done (damn women), so about 2:00 AM I went out and switched my welder from aluminum over to the stainless and welded them up. Then I took a flap disc to grind the welds down and clean up the rough cuts on the back of the base. Then I took some 80 grit on the DA to take out the scratches from the flap and also to level the sides of the posts and take out a few nicks they've picked up between being bent and bounced around in the shop.

Well now that I think we have the carb &timing sorted out I had to pull the tank it was leaking from around the soldered on bung. But the bit that ive driven her has been killer. She wants to run, tracks good and clears the speed tables at the mall
