Please help. My phone number won't do you any good, but let me know if you can help. Or call Ryan B? Thank you.

Off Topic Rants / Iraq
« on: July 31, 2009 6:19 PM »
Thought I'd start a post about my trip. I'll take pics to add to the descriptions.

I left 11 June, went to Fort Benning, Georgia where they lost the 15 of us for a couple days, sent us to another part of post for mobilization training. After 2 weeks, we flew to Kuwait where we spent a week doing 8 hours of training. A highlight is when I sat in a big motorized Humvee rotisserie  to train us how to react when the overloaded beasts finally tip over. Now, these humvees look roomy when you look at them in the U.S., but stuff all the radio equipment in there and add a bulky vest, a rifle, and a helmet and I can't even move around while upright. They hung us upside down in the simulator and said, "Ok, get out." Everbody else dropped to the ceiling and climbed out. My dumb ass must have looked like I was caught in a spider web, because I was. So that was Kuwait. Fuck Kuwait.

So now I'm in Al Basrah, Iraq, or 20 minutes outside of it, anyway. We're about 20 miles from Iran, which is comforting. We took this base over from the British, who left officially as of yesterday. I think yesterday's mortar/rocket attack had something to do with that, but thats just me.

Now the British had different standards of "base protection." The British also had 6 pubs on base. The Dutch were allowed to have hashish on their person, so you can see why not much got done. We're in the process of converting their chain-link and concertina wire fences to concrete walls, which is where I come in. I escort/direct one team of many made up of iraqi construction contractors who run cranes/forklifts and move concrete wall sections into place for "force protection," as they call it. This gives me plenty of time to sit and learn their language, their culture, etc.
They smell funny. I think its from a combination of no deodorant anywhere and the food they eat because I ate lunch with them a couple times and I had to take 2 showers those nights. I quiver from the flashbacks.

I live in a big tent with 40 other people. I have the top bunk. I did share a locker with someone, yes, share a locker with someone, but I scrounged up another locker that was 10 minutes away from being crushed and now I am the envy of the tent. I have my own locker, bitches. I shower in a trailer full of showers and shit in another trailer full of shitters. The showers and shitters aren't in the same trailer, and sometimes a hot shower just makes ya have to go, so sometimes I just pee in the shower. Good stuff. I kinda made that last part up. Kinda.

Life is good though. Simple. Not that physically difficult. The food is good. Can't complain. There are other ways to pay for school though, thats for sure. Until next time, Masallama.

Off Topic Rants / Golf Cart
« on: July 15, 2009 5:30 AM »
This golf cart belongs to a fellow named Rick Gronner. He was my High School shop teacher and now considered a good friend. I thought this golf cart would make some of you smile. It has a 340 Arctic cat snowmobile engine that he modified the ignition on so it runs forward AND reverse to make the cart go forward and reverse. Don't worry, its fast enough. This is typical Rick Gronner stuff. Makes anything work because he wants to. I like the style too. Anybody heard of the "coachmen."

He's waiting for me to get home so we can chop the top on his '35 Ford pickup. It'll sit on an S-10 frame but will be fendered. I will influence the build traditionally as much as possible. . .

Running Gear / Mallory Cap and Rotor for Olds Rocket
« on: March 13, 2009 8:47 PM »
I've looked for hours online for a cap and rotor for my Mallory Dual Point Distrubutor. NOS ones don't show up very often. So, I sat at NAPA and looked at the Echlin picture book for a half-hour. They actually list the cap and rotor as for the Mallory ZC and _C distributors. Neat. So, without further adeu:

Echlin

Cap: MA5

Rotor: MA7

Enjoy.

For Sale / Snow tires
« on: November 10, 2008 4:45 AM »
205/70-15  They were on my old grand prix. Used one winter, like new. If you haven't driven on snow tires, you'll never go back once you've had them. They're awesome. I forgot to put them back on my grand prix winter of '06-'07. Missed a curve and plowed into a pile of concrete after a VFW meeting. Don't let this happen to you. Buy now. They won't last long at the incredible price of $100.

Probably cheaper than the deductible on your insurance policy.

218-205-7477.

For Sale / Suedes Benefit Auction - Squindo Print
« on: September 28, 2008 7:17 PM »
I'm listing this for auction to end next sunday at noon. Goes by posted bid on the site. I bought this at the Road Zombies car show in Santa Clara (by San Jose) California. Show was hosted by Gambino Customs, and featured a stellar mix of really nice kustoms and hot rods.

The print was created by Tony Squindo, see the rest of his work at www.squindo.net. You will see that his work will remain coveted for a long time to come. I just went on there and decided I'm probably going to be bidding for the poster as well. His art is cool. This print is #19 of 150 printed, so bid to own this rare future classic.

Anyways, best of luck to all of you and don't be cheap, its going to the Suedes fund for the betterment of hot rodding everywhere.

Addendum: Bidding is in minimal increments of $2.50 for more fun.

Come and get a free bench. It's about 8 feet long. 30" deep. Call to come and pick it up. It ain't purdy, but it works.

The full size fridge will cost you 40 bucks and I have a student fridge for 30 bucks.

Have some cabinets, call me if you need dimensions or just come over and have a beer to take a look.

Parts cleaning tub: the bigger one that has 4 legs, doesn't stand on a drum or anything. Works great. $50

Brian, come get your sheetmetal brake.

Running Gear / Shot Blasting engine blocks
« on: September 21, 2008 6:40 PM »
who does it? I'd like to call them and ask them how stripped down the engine block has to be, threads, etc. and how much it costs. I was planning on throwing my flathead away because it looked rough, but I won't be able to sleep at night if I don't know that it is truly cracked up.

General Discussion / Cool Car art
« on: June 03, 2008 12:21 AM »
This guy was at goodguys. His prints were awesome, and many were quite affordable, from $35 and up for some good size prints. I kept my money, but kept his card for future reference. Most prints were in the $60 range. A couple were 1200 but they were large.

General Discussion / California Trip
« on: May 31, 2008 12:04 AM »
So, I'm in California for a month. I thought I should post the trip notes here. On the drive out, I stopped at Bonneville, of course, and it rained when I got to the end of the road. The salt was dry and driveable, but I didn't drive on it yet. I'm waiting. It stopped raining when I got back to the Interstate, so God's talking to me or something. I'll be back. . .

For this weekend, I talked to Alan, the owner of the Billetproof shows (aka Choptop) who suggested the Goodguys show (yes, I know what you're all thinking, but chill out) would be a great show to go to in Pleasanton, CA on Saturday. He said a lot of traditional cars and hambers will be there.
Then on Sunday I'm heading to Infineon Raceway to watch the Sonoma wine classic, or something like that. I call it #1 in my book. It's vintage formula 1 cars, sports cars, CanAm cars, vintage NASCAR road racing cars, and other vintage racers. Basically a lot of really rich guys with priceless racecars running around a road race course. I guess it ain't a parade either, they really kick it up. It'll be like a dream. I'll have pics.
