Tom, I have a smith setup. How small do you think I need for sheet metal. Is the AW201 small enough or should I go for the AW20 or AW200?

My torch handle is a Pureox (sp?) and I use a #2 tip for 18 and 20 gauge sheet metal. I see Pureox is not listed on the chart you have posted. Let me check tonight, I'll use a tip cleaner and mic it. That should get me close.

Gas welding is not rocket science, Pete was getting the hang of it. Set for neutral flame, have a small enough tip for the job. If you have too big tip opening and try to choke it back with a low flame it will pop back and blow a hole in the puddle. But the metal joint tight. Most of the stuff I did on Joel car this weekend had gaps and had to fill with rod, it doesn't make for a very good looking weld. Move the tip in a circular monition and back out for a second if you think you’re going to lose your puddle.

I think you mean "neutral flame".  #1 or #2 tip is all you should ever need for welding sheet metal.

To get a neutral flame - open acetylene till there is no soot - then adjust oxygen till the light feather disappears from the blue tip of the flame. Acetylene pressure should be 7# and oxy about 15# for welding.

We used to have the real small Smith torches, but when we made 6 new cart rigs last year they were not available any more.  Had to go with a larger torch, still Smith.

FIXED IT

In Pete's notes from the Winfied class Gene recommended a smith AW1-A torch. Mine is an AW-100 the only diff I can see on line is that mine has the valves at the base of the torch and the other has them up where the tip goes. Probably a better balance but they both take the same tips. I can't tell for sure if it is smaller but in the pics I have found they are about the same size.

Jake you say a #1 or #2. I assume that is the AW201 and AW202 tip. I have seen some posts that say use a 00 which may be the AW200 for 18-20ga and a 0 tip wich I think is the AW20 tip for 16ga. Not sure which one to order.

Tim, As the chart shows no two Companies used the same numbering system!! Jake should be able to help you out with the Smith tips.

My model A box sides are 16ga. I opted to use the wire feed when I cut them up, the OA didn't work as good. If you’re going to buy one tip I suggest the one for 18-20ga.

Ok Tim, looks like the AW201 would be the same size as what I use in a #2 in the Purox brand.

As for 16ga. I started to metal finish my 16ga. box sides last night and it's not easy. The bullseye pick is worthless, ya gota hammer a lot harder than on 18-20ga. I have been told old Ford sheet metal is 19ga. so I would recommend just the one tip.

The Auto Body program has been using those AW1 torches for longer than I've been here (32 yrs.) and the tips most used are the 201 and 202.  We have two 200 tips and around 20 each of the 201 and 202s. We used to have a manifold system with 24 torches set up on the walls of the two shops.  We have taken down the manifold systems and now have 7 portable rigs. One still has the aw1 torch and the rest are the newer CW5A torches that use MW tips. We were told the AWs were no longer available.

Henrobs aren't as great as you might first think.  I have used them and though quick, there still can be quite a bit of clean up after and the metal has to be clean.
