I have finally decided to do a build post, so here goes.

I pulled this old heap home in July 2008.  It was found in a tree row near Twin Valley.  The car was parked in 1976, and yes I got the "It ran real good when it was parked"  line.  Needless to say though, after sitting for 32 years, it no longer ran (that and the 1976 gas that was still in the tank had the consistency of burnt molasses). But for a couple hundred bucks and a tank of gas in the truck, I figured the drivetrain (FE, Cruis-O-Matic, Big 9 inch) was worth it if nothing else.

I started taking it a part and tagging and bagging everything.  I knew it would have to be stripped down to the bare frame and completely rebuilt.

I then sand blasted the frame and suspension components, and fixed the areas where the frame rails had rusted out. I also ground down and rewelded the factory seam welds along the entire length of the frame since it was obvious some were cracking and separating. 

The car is going to be bagged on all 4 corners, so I wanted a Triangulated 4-link for the rear.  There are kits out there, but I don't have that kind of income, so I designed and fabbed up my own.  By using the original forward spring mounts, I was able to keep it fairly simple.

I also decided to put a power rack and pinion unit in the front.  Again, there are very expensive kits out there, but I figured I could design and build something that would work.



Next it was time to prime and paint the frame



And the Suspension pieces.

By this point I was ready to tear down the motor and get it in to the machine shop.  Dennis Roy in Grand Forks is doing the machine work, and hopes to have it done this spring.  It will be a good strong street motor, nothing too fancy though.  352 Ford FE bored .030 over, 650 CFM Holley, lots of head work, 9.5:1 pistons, and Dennis's own cam (he-he). I neglected to take pics of the tear down, but I did score some rechromed Mercury valve covers.



I will post more pics when the motor is done.

So with the frame and Chassis nearly finished, and the engine in the machine shop, I figured I should get to work on the body.  I decided that I would need a rotissere for a body this large.  However, I didn't trust the flimsy ones I saw out on the market, so I designed and built one that would handle the wagon.

Now came the challenge of stripping the body in order to see exactly what all needed to be repaired.  I knew the floor, rockers, and rear quarters need serious help, but I needed to find out how much.

Looks good, couple suggestions, sleeve bags suck, and if you're not running shocks in the rear, I would get some slam specialties bags for the back, re-6.  Second, your front suspension looks about the same as my '57.  If the spring cup is the same as mine like it looks like, you're not going to be able to cut for bag clearance, you'll want to run slam specialty bags up front too.  I'm not running shocks with my slam bags and it rides great.  More importantly slam bags are the only ones that get thinner when aired up, allowing enough clearance.  

I used fullsize chevy truck cups on mine, but then I found out a s-10 spring fits in there from people, so I will probably go back in and use s10 cups.  There's just enough slop in the cups I used that while I didn't notice any point in the slop it would rub but for my own piece of mind I'm gonna replace it with s10 cups.

Antibling,  Thanks for the info.  I didn't have the rear shocks installed when I took the pics, but it will be run with them.  I got the rear bags cheap, but I might still change them out before I am done with this.  I am going to run Air Over Shocks on the front, rather than bags and shock relocation.

Shockwaves or their equivalent.  There are a few other manufacturers that are cheaper than Air Ride, but I am not convinced that the quality is the same.

The only company that I know that makes a "shockwave" copy, is AIM, they have a billion different company names to trick people into buying their crap.  Bad products and bad service, so I'd stay away.
