Title: 51 Chevy Progress
Post by: sixinarow on October 20, 2009 1:24 AM
Its been off and on progress, but it has been more since I have been renting space at Driven. After taking the engine halfway apart to get motor mounts swapped out I was worried about firing it up. Antibling (HUGE thanks by the way) and I final got a quick wiring set up and set out to giver the 235 life. It was damn exciting! Just need to get a cooling system lined up and I'll be set to do some fine tuning.

Here's a moving picture, if it works (Don't worry the blue fuel line will be replaced by solid lines):

Looks like a lotta fun going on out there...I just got home from hauling the exact same car as yours home from Walkers for a parts car. I found a ragtop this summer and have started to aquire all the missing pieces. I'm chomping on the bit to start on this but its gotta wait for other started projects to be completed. Whats all the plans for the tudor?

Stefan you gotta get a shot of the rear fender up.... surprise surprise!
Title: RE: Chebby
Post by: sixinarow on November 23, 2009 3:22 PM
Here are plans:
Shave the filler door, move the filler into the trunk. French the stock headlight rims. shave the taillights and install either 53 Olds or 56 Chevy lenses about an inch lower than the stock location. Ideally I would like to find Olds side trim that runs from behind the front wheel to the rear of the back quarter and a front upper grille bar from and Olds also. Scooped rear quarters with teeth. Just realized I like a lot of Olds stuff from the early 50s.
Parts car you say Weidrich? I might need a patch panel for my nasty upper rear quarter if you don't need it. I'll post pics of that eyesore later after work.
Title: Quarter
Post by: tracywiedrich on November 23, 2009 10:17 PM
If you need the passenger quarter your outta luck cause thats the main thing I need off the donor. The drivers quarter I dont think I will need...I'll wait for the pictures.of your bad quarter...There is quite a few of these old chevies around this area though, so lemme know whatcha are gonna need...Weed

I went out and checked out the quarter, and if you just need the piece in the red square we should be good. I kinda wanna keep the lower section around the bumper area as mine was butchered for a homemade continental kit. It looks like you plan to keep your rear section as you've already worked on the door and bumper area eh? I dont know how soon you need it or if your coming this way but it should work for ya...lemme know

Title: qvestions
Post by: tracywiedrich on January 10, 2010 4:37 AM
Stephan, I have two questions that you prolly answered already but I couldnt rember for sure...Are those the stock chevy headlite rims and what is your plan for taillights? I have looked at hundreds of different taillight treatments on 51-52 chevs and I'm having trouble finding something that looks good and hasnt been used a hundred times before. The closest I've seen that I like are 41 stude lights...just wundering what you got planned?
Title: RE: qvestions
Post by: sixinarow on January 10, 2010 3:12 PM
The trim rings are stock without trimming the lip of the bucket. Taillights will be what I believe are 56 chevy lenses I got from other Ryan mounted in roughly the same place that 50 Pontiacs were. Stude lights are cool, I passed around the idea of doing a bumper guard treatment too before deciding on the 56s.

Here are some pictures lagging from past and a more current work. My tailpan is all completed, and I have nosed my hood.

Yesterday I made the first cut into the floor, and then another and another. I knew they were bad and it just sucks uncovering it all. But, out with the bad in with the good. Sorry no pics, but its not pretty.

Soon to come will be rear quarter patches, rockers and floors.

well I still haven't gotten anything fixed yet from last summer, ie: brake lines, master cylinder, front brakes, wheel bearing (again, maybe), front suspension, alignment, and tires. all adds up to a lot more than I got right now. but hopefully i can get it done for 50's. just isn't the same w/o a car :(

Joel put in a call in search of some 1949-50 Pontiac side trim for me and found 3/4 of a set. It sounds a little rough but should clean up.

Deuce, I forgot about your new place, I'll have to check it out next time I'm in town. Hope the Poncho comes together for 50s!

Post by: sixinarow on May 03, 2010 3:59 PM
A long overdue update.
New rockers are in. All patch panels except the nasty upper quarter, are welded in. Mocking up my floor supports now and will be starting on floors this week once the seat is in its finalized position. Found a full set of 50 Pontiac Side trim, a set of 56 Buick Caps, and a 54 or Trifive Chev one piece bumper for the rear. Rings have been made for my taillight lenses and will be mounted once I get the side trim so they are all centered and lined up.
Once the floor is done Im focusing on the mechanicals and hoping repair the metal thats left and to spot primer as it is driving.

Did some grill work with the help of Pinstriper this past Sunday and a little bit more yesterday. Can't decide if I want to leave the chrome upper or mold in some tube to be painted body color.

Floors are done and painted. Just need to get some gasket material for the MC cover and Trans Hump.

Title: Swell-erific!!
Post by: sixinarow on September 03, 2010 3:35 PM
Remember the nasty spot on my quarter? Well it's finally looking better. I also red did the fuel filler door piece as it was pretty crappy (my first sheetmetal work on the car) and got a fuel filler neck from Antibling's parts car. I'll be able to wrap up the filler relocate to trunk, just need a 53-54 gas cap.
A new door and improved door has been hung and the inner guts swapped in. Brakes are bled and seat wrapped with a blanket (haha).

I nabbed a wire harness last week and have been steadily plugging away on it. I'd say I am 75% of the way through it. I also decided on keeping the stock pump and pulley so I will push the radiator forward by flipping the support around and trimming the gravel pan. I am ordering a few things now to finish off my wiring and my fuel setup. She's getting closer....
Title: RE: Swell-erific!!
Post by: Serious on September 24, 2010 10:49 PM
the radiator fits right behind the crossmember in the hood and cannot go forward if it is the stock radiator.  the best you could do is tilt the bottom forward.  you will have clearance issues with the hood if you move the top forward.
Title: RE: Swell-erific!!
Post by: sixinarow on September 24, 2010 11:18 PM
The 51 I pulled the radiator out of had it bumped forward. I think I recall some guys trimming some of the inner hood structure and some guys saying they didnt have to. I will find out this weekend.

Well last Saturday I cleared a path out of the shop to take the 51 for a lap around the lot. In a way I did get to drive the 51, but there was no tension on the clutch and I had to start it in gear. Water pump is  bent and leaking so a new one will get sourced and I hope that solves why my pulleys ate my fan belt.

It was night time and I was by myself so no photos or vid still. So damn close, exciting yet a set back.

Edit: I also got my overrider figured out. Thanks again Tom.

stephan, came across this on ebay there is for days left on it. think it would look good on your car with a fenton dual exhaust headers. i had a 50 chevy with two carbs and duals and it ran great. just a thought, congrats on getting it moving by the way

This thread needs some updating.....

Finally got my Mystery One-Piece bumper fully fitted and welded (Thanks Pete and Tyrel) and the holes for the overrider drilled. Now I will just need to mold in a new gravel guard to fit the sculpted shape of the new bumper.

I also discovered some rot in the bottom of my passenger side door so made a new inner section and door skin that is currently getting tacked into place.

(No pic, too bad)

Just a little sheetmetal work to do up front to make the 55 grille fit nicely, shave the decklid of its trim holes and some rear wheel-well patches that are on their way, then its full on body work time.

Is that rear mystery bumper maybe a front 55-56 chev bumper? Looks good whatever it is...

I want to say its an early 50s Olds or Pontiac Bumper but 55-6 Chevy might be right.

Well a weekend looking at cars and conversing/drinking with fellow rodders always does a good job of getting me in the mood to get some shit done.

I templated my gravel pan tonight, ground down the welds on the bumper, shaved down "The One" to fit the bumper better and started in a a license plate mount for it.

Well, the weekend was surreal. Drunk off lack of sleep and just the excitement of a "done" car.
Big thank you to the guys in the club and the guys in the shop. It never would have made it to this point without you guys.

I'll get some better pics once more things are buttoned up.

order today, have them monday or I am pretty sure the racer shops stock them in town.

The banjo fittings need to be a 45 degree as the wheel cylinders have a an angled backside to clear the kingpin. I'm going to check around (Bergs, Performance Auto, NAPA...) and see what I can dig up.
Joel dropped off a temp gauge that I'll hook up for some vitals, and I might as well sort out my fuel gauge while I'm at it.

Finally got around to swapping out the 235 that shat the bed on the way back from Watertown last summer. Picked up a 54 235 out of Wisconsin and painted it the obligatory gold color. Runs great and doesn't leak oil! Also scored a set of whitewalls for around town. A big thank you to Tim, Tokyo, Blaine and Bolo for the extra hands. Engine pics to come soon-ish...

I've moved it to my new place, eyed-up the under dagmar. I'll have to drill out a rivet and pound out a small dent.

Have you been able to do anything with the grill?
