I have finally decided to do a build post, so here goes.
I pulled this old heap home in July 2008. It was found in a tree row near Twin Valley. The car was parked in 1976, and yes I got the "It ran real good when it was parked" line. Needless to say though, after sitting for 32 years, it no longer ran (that and the 1976 gas that was still in the tank had the consistency of burnt molasses). But for a couple hundred bucks and a tank of gas in the truck, I figured the drivetrain (FE, Cruis-O-Matic, Big 9 inch) was worth it if nothing else.

I started taking it a part and tagging and bagging everything. I knew it would have to be stripped down to the bare frame and completely rebuilt.

I then sand blasted the frame and suspension components, and fixed the areas where the frame rails had rusted out. I also ground down and rewelded the factory seam welds along the entire length of the frame since it was obvious some were cracking and separating.
The car is going to be bagged on all 4 corners, so I wanted a Triangulated 4-link for the rear. There are kits out there, but I don't have that kind of income, so I designed and fabbed up my own. By using the original forward spring mounts, I was able to keep it fairly simple.

By this point I was ready to tear down the motor and get it in to the machine shop. Dennis Roy in Grand Forks is doing the machine work, and hopes to have it done this spring. It will be a good strong street motor, nothing too fancy though. 352 Ford FE bored .030 over, 650 CFM Holley, lots of head work, 9.5:1 pistons, and Dennis's own cam (he-he). I neglected to take pics of the tear down, but I did score some rechromed Mercury valve covers.

So with the frame and Chassis nearly finished, and the engine in the machine shop, I figured I should get to work on the body. I decided that I would need a rotissere for a body this large. However, I didn't trust the flimsy ones I saw out on the market, so I designed and built one that would handle the wagon.

Looks good, couple suggestions, sleeve bags suck, and if you're not running shocks in the rear, I would get some slam specialties bags for the back, re-6. Second, your front suspension looks about the same as my '57. If the spring cup is the same as mine like it looks like, you're not going to be able to cut for bag clearance, you'll want to run slam specialty bags up front too. I'm not running shocks with my slam bags and it rides great. More importantly slam bags are the only ones that get thinner when aired up, allowing enough clearance.
I used fullsize chevy truck cups on mine, but then I found out a s-10 spring fits in there from people, so I will probably go back in and use s10 cups. There's just enough slop in the cups I used that while I didn't notice any point in the slop it would rub but for my own piece of mind I'm gonna replace it with s10 cups.

Antibling, Thanks for the info. I didn't have the rear shocks installed when I took the pics, but it will be run with them. I got the rear bags cheap, but I might still change them out before I am done with this. I am going to run Air Over Shocks on the front, rather than bags and shock relocation.

Shockwaves or their equivalent. There are a few other manufacturers that are cheaper than Air Ride, but I am not convinced that the quality is the same.

The only company that I know that makes a "shockwave" copy, is AIM, they have a billion different company names to trick people into buying their crap. Bad products and bad service, so I'd stay away.

Thanks for the advice. I just have a hard time swallowing the $900+ that Air Ride wants for the Shockwaves, even though they are supoosed to be top of the line. I had to cut down the money tree a couple of years ago so I could build my house/shop, and those damn things don't grow back very fast.

Want more advice? Dont use shockwaves. They don't provide much lift.

Well it has been six months since my last post, so I thought I should at least show a little progress. I still don't have the engine home from the machine shop, but that is fine. Denny has most of the machining done, and is starting the short block assembly. The heads are done, assembled and look great. I will post pics when I get it home.

Because of the lack of motor, I have been doing rust repair. I am basically complete with the passenger side sheet metal, and am ready to start on the drivers side. I basically rebuilt the bottom 8 inches of the car from the firewall back.

Wow. Seem to be on this six months since my last update kick. I have been spending way too much time on the road for work, and not nearly enough in the shop. Either way, here is some proof that something is happening.
The sheet metal work on the floors, rockers, and rear quarters is now complete enough that I could drop the body back on the frame and make sure that there are no interferences with the rear suspension.

It is also time for me to set up steering and drop the motor and trans in to make sure there are no clearance issues there. Hopefully that can be completed in the next couple of weeks before I head back down to So-Cal for work.
It sits right were I want it to with no air in the bags. The roof is just below chest high.

Engine Update:
Well after taking a month away from the Merc to do a valve job on the Windsor in '51 F-1. I decided I should get back at it.
As some of you guys may know, I have had a bit of trouble with the engine. Denny Roy in Grand Forks was doing the machine work and short block assembly. Unfortunately he suffered what I understand to be a fairly severe stroke around New Years. Because of this, his shop and business was thrown into legal limbo. It took me the next 4 months to finally get the pieces of my motor back. Most of the machine work was done, the heads were assembled, and all the parts were there except rod bearings and oil pump. Unfortunately, cylinder #5 still needed to be sleeved, and cam bearings had to be installed. So, 2 weeks ago the block got dropped off in Hallock at Hultgren's Engine and Machine. Stephan and Gary are now taking very good care of it, and I will have it back next week. Either way, time to do some head porting and polishing...

1.75 in. exhaust and 2.19 in. intake valves should have the old 352 breathing a bit better.
The FE will start getting assembled next week. Stay tuned.

Yea, it is a flat tappet and I know all about the "right" oil, no worries there. It is going to get "broke in" on Gary Hultgren's dyno anyways. Hopefully we will have it on the pump some time after BTTF's. I will post results.

Merc Wagon Update:
Well the summer is half over and I have not been nearly as productive as I had hoped. The engine assembly hit a bit of a snag. On doing the initial turn over (by hand - thankfully), it became readily apparent that those big exhaust valves I was so proud of are hitting the cylinder wall. Not a big deal, but the block and heads are back up at Hultgren's waiting there turn on the milling machine. It is not a huge interference ( < 0.020"), but the block will get relieved, similar to big block Chebbies.
However, with no engine around, it was back to body work. The headers above the windshield and tailgate were both rusted out really bad due to mice nests. I ordered some replacement roof sections from Arizona and started chopping.
First, we need to add some extra support.

And this is part of the reason for not getting much of anything done this year. But, I can now say I have ridden snowmobile on snow in July. Some times my job isn't all that bad.

Update Time....
The rear tailgate header is now fixed, just some grinding left to do there. The engine is fully assembled and painted. The transmission is on order and should be delivered in a couple of weeks. Jay at Broader Performance is building up a nice AOD to back up the 352. With the engine sitting in the chassis, it is time to start thinking about exhaust, steering, and brake and fuel lines. The goal is to have a complete rolling chassis by New Year's.

Thanks, I guess once I started on it, I figured there was no turning back. Chalk it up to shear ignorance or being a glutton for punishment. It has been over 3 years now on this project, and it is a really good feeling to start putting stuff back together. But it will likely take me a couple more years before this thing is on the road, at least the wife knows where I am at.

Time for another update. I didn't quite make my New Year's Goal, but progress is being made.
Accessories: I fabbed up mounts for both the AC compressor and the alternator. It worked out well as I was able to put the AC compressor in the same spot as the original generator and mount the alternator directly above it. The power steering pump is stock.

Exhaust and Steering: I ordered a set of headers from FPA. I then went about connecting the steering column to the rack and pinion. There wasn't much room, but the headers fit well and all I had to do was cheat the rack and pinion over 1.5" and it all came together. I forgot to take pictures, but once the headers get back from the ceramic coaters, I will snap a few. Here is a pic of the small area four tubes and a steering linkage had to fit through.

Fuel Tank: I needed a new fuel tank since the original one was a study in corrosion, and there was no way I was going to be able to save it. Unfortunately, no body reproduces tanks for the early 60's Galaxies or Monterey Wagons. If it had been a 2 or 4 door, no problem, but the wagon is different. So I decided to make my own. Now, since I was going through the hassle of making my own tank, I figured I might as well make it as large as possible in order to get as much range out of this car as I could. I hate the small 15 gal. tank in my '51 as I have to fill up every 250 miles. My goal was 400 miles or about 25 gals. Anyways, after using my X-mas break to pound out some sheet metal, It went from this...

I pressure checked the tank, just a couple of pin holes to weld up, and all was fine. Now I have to seal the inside and paint it.
Transmission: In my last post I mentioned ordering an AOD from Broader Performance. It is built, the trans was dynoed on Dec. 22nd and shipped Jan 4th. I will have it next week, then I will build a trans cross member, check floor clearances, and paint it.
Once the trans clearance is OKed, then the body will come off the frame (again) for under-coat and the chassis can be completed, exhaust, final paint, air, fuel, and brake lines, etc, all while the engine will return to Hultgren's for it's turn on the dyno. The next couple of months should be fun.

The car was complete when I got it, and all of the interior trim was in pretty good shape. I have saved all of it. Head liner, seats, door panels, etc.

Serious - So far FPA headers are great. They fit up exactly as I was promised. They are extremely well constructed, and with the extra thick flanges and mating end, they should last for ever with out leaking. I ordered mine uncoated and then had our exhaust coating supplier at work ceramic coat them. The motor gets twisted up on the dyno next week, so we will find out if there are any problems, but I am not expecting anything unusual.

Ran the motor on Hultgren's Engine dyno today. No major problems, just a few minor leaks which were easy to take care of. Power was about what I was expecting, 365 ft-lbs of torque and 310 Hp. Nothing earth shattering, but quite good for only 352 cubic inches and pump gas. Considering the motor was rated at only 225 Hp from the factory, it is quite an improvement. The motor sounded great and ran really well. plus the nice flat torque curve will also help to get the big wagon moving.

Update Time Again....
Here is proof that I have actually been working on the wagon this summer. Since the last update, the body came back off, the trans and motor are permanently in. I have been cutting and welding the 2.5" stainless exhaust together so I can get the nice set of bellflower tips I picked up at BTTF's hung. Grand Forks Welding made up a very nice driveshaft and that is installed. There are airbags on all 4 corners and some plumbing has started. The radiator has been repaired and I fixed the rust on the core support.
Pinstriper has the door panels and he is working to make those look better then original.
Now I have to get the body undercoated, the firewall and core support painted so the body can go back on the chassis so the exhaust can be finished around the fuel tank.

The Circle of Life.
All I could think about while I was applying the new undercoating was how much of a complete pain in the ass it was to get the old stuff off the first time. And in that case, 2/3rd's of the floor was rusted out.....
Just need to paint the firewall, and the body is ready to go back on the frame for the final time.

Got the core support and firewall painted this week. The body is now back on the chassis (hopefully permanently), now time to finish up all the plumbing - coolant, air, brakes, fuel, exhaust, trans, etc. Should be enough there to keep me busy over the holidays.
I am going to sell the rotisserie, so keep your eyes on the classifieds. I just want to make sure I won't need it one more time.

Lots of work got done over the Holiday's just not much you can see in the pictures.
- Fuel Tank was under-coated, sealed, and mounted.
- Air Tank, Compressor, and Valve Body was mounted and plumbing began.
- Radiator mounted and hooked up.
- Master Cylinder and Booster mounted.
- Exhaust fully welded and finished back to the tips.
Now I have lots more plumbing to do.

I'm excited to see this car get finished! It'll definitely be something that hasn't been seen around here for a while- especially with the paint selection and wild interior. It's ALIVE!!!!!
The motor was started in the car for the first time this afternoon. It has a pretty good bark to it, but I will have to turn the hi idle down a bit.

95% of the plumbing is complete, just heater and AC lines left. Brakes need to be bled, but all other fluids are in and amazingly, none leak. Time to strip and hang the doors and front fenders so I can get this thing off to paint.

It is starting to look like a wagon.... Inner Fenders have been stripped, repaired, painted and undercoated. Front Fenders have been sandblasted, rust fixed, and undercoated. Doors also got the blast and repair treatment. Just have to get the tailgate, hood, and splash apron stripped and cleaned up.

First Drive this Evening....
Well out of one garage door, to the end of the drive way, and back into another stall, but under its own power so it counts. The big girl gets loaded onto a trailer this weekend and brought down to Northern Muscle for paint. Pictures will follow.....

It isn't that bad as there are a whole bunch of things that have been getting neglected (Debbie would argue that she is one of them) in order to get this thing out of my garage. So now I can get caught up on a bunch of other projects.

I also scored a NOS piece of tailgate trim on Flea-Bay this week. $20 was a pretty good deal, but then again I may be the only person in the country (world???) currently restoring / building one of these wagons.

I also dug a 430 MEL out of the woods 2 weekends ago. With the 6-71 hanging on the wall of the shop, I may just have to build something to pull behind the wagon, FED maybe..... Or since this is the Land of 10,000+ lakes, a MEL powered boat perhaps.......

Happy Winter Solstice to me. Greg Jr. got the Merc primered today. He also layed out an idea for the panel paint with the guide coat. I am going to bring the dash down there on Monday and we will try to finalize the panel layout. Now they can start blocking the car down. Color will be soon. Stay tuned.

Yep - 2015. Unfortunately, there is way to much work to do yet for this year's show. I still have to finish the wiring harness, trim, bumpers, and glass when it comes back from the painters. And after that, it goes down to Stillwater to finish the upholstery. With any luck it will be driven by late summer / early fall.

I have no plans at this point to stripe the scallops, but some good suggestions may change my mind....

Deb and I brought the car down to Stillwater this weekend so Jennie of Upholstery by Stich Bitch fame can work her magic and give the Merc a new interior. For the most part, a great weekend for a road trip. Unfortunately it was raining when we dropped the car off, and I was in such a hurry to get it into her garage, that I forgot to take some pics. However, use your imaginations to picture what it now looks like with the glass all in, the door handles on, and a proper wiring harness.

The car has been back home now for about a month. I have the exterior completely finished except for the radio antenna. I just need to finish the dash, finish glueing in the door weatherstripping, and plumb the HVAC.

It will be at Prime Steel for sure. I was hoping to make it to Gopher State as well, but that is the same weekend as Prime Steel, so maybe next year. I haven't made my mind up about Toppers yet. I may drag it out to Jamestown if they decide to have their indoor show again this year. I wouldn't mind doing either Minot or Duluth either. We will see what the new year brings.

Just about the end. I have all the wiring and under dash componentry completed. Just need to touch a few things up under the hood, and it will effectively be complete. I will have to bring it in for an alignment and AC charge when things warm up a bit.

Well guys, the car is essentially done. At the end of Feb, I took it back down to Northern Muscle for a final detail job. After that it went over to Westside Motors in Thief for alignment and AC charge. And now with this warm weather I have been cruising it around Warren trying to work the bugs out before any big trips this summer (BTTF's and Meltdown Drags). So far it drives great and rides nice. I have to change speedo drive gears, but that was expected. Anyways, we are off to Duluth next weekend for the Motorhead Madness show.

Hit my 1st "Bump-in-the-road". Right front wheel bearing decided to crap out last night on the way to El-Roco cruise night. Got it towed back home thanks to a friend / co-worker. Looks like there was a casting flaw in the rotor, a nice crack developed next to the inner bearing race, and a chunk came loose and took out the outer bearing. Aren't Old cars Fun???

It is a conversion created by a gentlemen out of northern Wisconsin. He is Hotrod428 on the HAMB and he sells conversion kits for fullsize Fords and Studebakers. Essentially it is a Granada rotor with Monte Carlo calipers. The website is below. I am really happy with the kit otherwise. The rotor of course was a chinese replacement from the local Auto Value.

I like it. I got it really cheap from a co-worker whose dad had it and was upgrading to a proper 4 post lift. It fits nicely in my shop, a 4 post would be to big for the shop, and I am too chicken shit to drill into my floor for a 2-post lift (hot water lines and all in the floor). I really like being able to roll it around, even with a car on it. I am currently using it as an assembly table for the '32 Plymouth I am now building. I did the same thing with the Merc. Put the bare chassis on it and start building from there. It is the perfect height for doing stuff like that.

My father had a PB Cabriolet at one time... Traded it to Dennis Delzer for his Model A. at the time it was a good deal. looking back, probably should have hung onto the PB.

Maybe. I am building it for 2 brothers who farm near Warren. They want more of a resto-mod style rather than a traditional hot rod. IFS and triangulated 4-bar, 2 tone black and maroon paint, and full fenders and hood are fairly street roddy. Thankfully we went with the 325 Dodge Hemi, even though it will be hidden by the hood sides. I figured it might be a bit to far OT for this board.
